SIMPLE ANSWER, and you will see this on all vehicles these days:

1) government regulations to make the car safer (think heavier) such as side impact members, airbags, etc ... list goes on and on.

2) all of the amenities to make the prettier, quieter, more comfy .... such as sound deadening material, lots of speakers (magnets are heavy), power seats, a/c, etc ..... take some cues from the new Z28 on what they did to reduce weight.
