I'd rather just buy a V1 or V2 but if I can't, it seems like a right angle OBDII extension with a cool power switch you install would fix a lot of concerns and be a nice option and bring in some revenue. Could do what the V1 guy did who loved his setup, stick it in the door panel. To me it would be even better if the switch automatically went off with the car and had to be turned on after startup (forgetting to turn it on won't drain battery if on vacation while forgetting to turn it off will). And something along these lines from you with a switch I'm sure would look more professional than us with soldering guns.

What you guys/Adam think? This extension is $10, with a switch could be what $20, $25? Nice margin. (smiley face)

So my Range showed up Monday but it has been raining....yesterday afternoon got a break in the rain so I plugged the Range in and took my car out for a test drive and I am in with my car again.....no more embarrassing fart noise! I don't drive my car everyday so its not an issue for me to unplug it everytime. Why have I waiting till now to order this thing??

AFAIK as long as the status is listed under his avatar he is still a sponsored vendor. As for why he has no posts, I have no idea.

Lol....just curious if you think my idea of cutting wire to pin 16 on my obd ext cable, and wiring it to constant 12v only when engine is running would be safe? I went hold you responsible... Just wondering what your opinion might be?

Is it not the same as a subwoofer install? Even though you have the power cord, the remote wire, and the negative hooked up in the car and the car is shut off, the amp still will draw power from the battery, since it still has the positive cord hooked to the battery terminal. I know, i let my car sit a week with my subs hooked up so it died. Had to go to autozone to get it charged.

So my opinion with the range, even if you wire it to work off a constant 12V and the car was turned off, the range would still draw power, ultimately putting you back in the same situation youre in now.

Like Adam said, it is much more easy to just unplug it when not in use for more than 3 days.

The only wire that draws power from the battery is wire/pin 16....I plan on cutting that wire. It will only be hot when the car is running..... so no power is being drawn when the car is off

It should only be on with the key off when first installed. Otherwise - it will go out when you key off. It's not the light that draws the current. It's the CAN.

I'm going to get Ken (engineer) on here to start answering some of these more techy questions. I'm getting over my head.

Best,
Adam

Pin 16 has Power regardless of key switch position. So a switch in-line of pin 16 wire will definitely remove the 12v power , What I am curious to know is does it draw current from the 12v or the 5v ? And also if a switch is installed in-line and that switch is off upon starting car will it cause any lights due to the fact the communication wires are still connected to the OBD port but no power is on the range device to allow it to communicate ?

maybe it would just be best to unplug the range when not in use. No reason to get all technical and possibly messing up your car due to some electrical fabricating.

it can be if you are not careful. could short, mess up your ECU. I'm not questioning your ability or anything but it just seems like a lot of work rather than simply unplugging it.
