How much fuel to have in the tank when drag racing?

How much gas to have in your tank when drag racing?

Well I tried doing some research, and got varied answers. Some say have as low as you can, about 1/4 to decrease weight, while others said 3/4-1/2 because the fuel weight is right over the rear tires, which will help you gain traction.

Considering the Camaro already has more than enough weight, what do you guys think, the less weight the better? I tried both at the track. One time I was at 1/4 tank, and another I was at 3/4 tank. Did not notice a huge difference. Common sense tells me the less weight the better, but this what I found. (1/8 Mile). Car is completely stock.

1/4 Tank: 60' was 2.15 with a time of 9.52 (Tire pressure was about 34)
3/4 Tank: 60' was 2.20 with a time of 9.74 (Was a bit warmer temp, tire press about 32, and had a passenger)

I know many more variables are to be considered, so what do you guys think?

thats like 100 extra lbs..

on vapor.. then put 2 gallons of race fuel at the track..
thats all you need.

When I do go to the track I usually run with 1/8 of a tank. And fill as needed.

Of course we are tuned and heavily modded.. Dope or Boost..( or both) not stock cars. 600-1500+ hp cars down here.

Traction. Spins out of control with anything less. Part of the reason my cars race weight is 4217 lbs.

I fill the entire tank with 104. It's about $250.

Respectully, Jamie you need adjustable drag shocks and need to play with a 2 step, got to pull out weight sir.

I run 1/4 tank if I can time it right, but sometimes it's 1/2 tank.

If I remember correctly, fuel weighs around 6 lbs per gallon....so approximately...

20 gal (full) = 120 lbs

5 gal (1/4 tank)= 30 lbs

90 pounds less with 1/4 tank....that's how I'd roll....lol...

I have the Pfadt drag specific shocks so we are working with that. Limited track time this year is killing the progress. Only two trips so far.
Couple more trips and ill get it dialed in. Hopefully before camaro fest.


No two step. I leave off idle. Maybe 1000 if I'm feeling crazy. Any higher and no traction.

Def no weight reduction. I race it the way I drive it in the street. Just swap tires.

Ill loose more than .1 blowing the tires off.

Just think, I also have a 5 gallon ice cell in the trunk as well!!

about 3/4 tank...lets me make 8-10 passes and know I have #1 traction and #2 the fuel pump covered so it doesn't get hot.

I used to run my tank as low as possible to save weight. I even ran out of gas on the starting line one time. That was a little embarrassing. That was way back with my '01 WS6. Now I run around 1/2 to help improve traction.

On 20s no matter what tire a full tank worked best. 18s and MTs I liked saving weight and ran 1/4 tank or less. No traction with 20s. This was before the blower. Now I just can't hook

1/2 a tank my 60's are in the mid 1.5's

1/4 tank they are in the very low 1.6's

this is with a 650rwhp car on 20" nitto 555r 18psi, the full bmr race susp pkg.

I have run between 1/2 and full tank and have not noticed any difference in 60' 1.497 best with low 1.5 average on 18" DR's. I did run around a 1/4 tank once and did not see a change so I like to stay around 1/2. Don't want to have low fuel pickup issues??

1/4 tank unless you are pushing big HP and can't get traction already like Jamie! I don't think 1/4 of a tank vs 1/2 is gonna do much difference on a 60ft.

Agreed. As soon as I get under an 1/8 tank I start to see a little more activity on the knock sensor.

Big HP is what I don't push. 730 isn't what if consider big compared to a lot of these cars. My car just comes on all at once. It's either on or off. There seems to be no middle ground.
