The problem is, the wheels are shipping via a freight division of UPS. FedEx and UPS have extremely disorganized freight divisions.

My advice to you, in case of a worse-case scenario, is have your camera ready when UPS shows up. Get pictures of the wheels immediately with the driver present (hopefully, these require signature and they don't just leave them at your door).

Also, and this requires serious patience, if you note any damage or you are not happy with the wheels, refuse the shipment! The wheels will then have to be returned to the shipper and they will have to send you a new pair. Once you take possession, the onus is on you.
