Trains

I'm a train fan....yes, I even own Train Simulator 2013.

I find this sort of train very cool, and wouldn't mind seeing this done coast to coast in the U.S.

I went to the Western Pacific Museum in Portola, CA near Reno to drive a Diesel Locomotive. It was a blast sitting 10 feet off the ground and throttle up 1500 horsepower around their 1 mile loop of track.

Yes I love trains too!

That was a pretty cool video an if only our govt would invest in our own infrastructure than petty other things we could have things like this. It would solve a lot of commuting problems in major cities if people could travel great distances and still not have to waste time in traffic.

I am an old train fan....especially the steam locomotives.

Love the Maglev train, too bad the morons that run our country are too short-sighted to see the benefits of such a train.

Maglev is amazing. Hopefully in 30 years we'll have a nation-wide rail system.

I think Americans like their cars too much for modern passenger trains to be popular again.

For steam fans, Union Pacific is considering restoring a Big Boy locomotive to run along with the 3985 Challenger and 844.

I've heard bullet, but I haven't really researched it. So it could be the other. I just know it's a 5 hour drive by car and the train was suppose to cut the travel time down to around 2 hours.

I found a link about it.

High speed trains compete with airlines more than they do with cars. While an airplane itself is fast, airports themselves are slow. A train that travels around 1/3 the speed of an airliner could easily make up for the wasted ground time on shorter trips. Quicker trip, less hassle, at a lower cost. A lot of people would be interested in that.

Maglev trains are AWESOME. I remember in highschool in like '99 we had a technology class and we built motors and generators etc... we also had a contest who could build the most effecient maglev racer. We setup a track and everything. Was a lot of fun to learn tinker with.

EDIT- my dad loves trains... so we used to go to train yards and museums a lot when i was growing up... Was a lot of fun.

I agree but the infrastructure for 200+ mph trains isn't there. Besides, it's not like the trains can run that speed everywhere. There are limits to where those speeds are realistic.

Love the Nickel Plate 765 video! When I was a kid they had Nickel Plate #587 Baldwin Light Mikado 2-8-2 sitting in Broad Ripple Park with a shed roof over it . Us kids used to crawl all over it. Sat there from 1955 until 1983 when it was donated to the Indiana Transportation Museum based in Noblesville IN. They restored it and returned it to service. Unfortunately it's 15 year Federal license expired at the end of 2002 requiring it to have a total re-haul of the train/boiler before it can be Federally certified again. We chased that thing all over when it was running. Sounds stupid but something about that sound and steam whistle takes me back to a former life or something, sort of a haunting feeling. They hope to have it completed soon. http://itm.org/nkp587.php

Back in '93 they actually teamed up and ran together!

I like Mikes best, they were the workhorse of steam. I have always liked the Northern Pacific best, and they had the largest Heavy Mikes, because the coal they burnes was low grad at the peat moss end of the spectrum, so the had to have huge smoke boxes up front and huge fireboxes under the cab. They had to put doghouses on the tenders because the fireman was always back there messing with the coal.

The Ca "train to nowhere" is a perfect example. In 2008, voters approved 9 billion to build it from SF to LA. Now it will cost 60 billion (and climbing) and they still have not broke ground. Politics will stop any US effort to build high speed trains.
