Michael
I got a buddy who is an ME in powertrain up at GM. Has had many many LS motors on dynos for very long periods of time. He says "seat the rings, then beat the car." I'll listen to him. He is an engineer, and he told it to me on the internet.

I just picked up my 1LE yesterday from a dealer 150 miles from home. The car had 117 miles on the clock at pickup, no idea how it was driven as these were probably test drives. The 150 was a combination of highway at 65 and short 25 - 35 mph stints through small towns. Also some mountain pass driving at speed. If I drain the oil and replace with non-synthetic should I just work it hard for the rest of the 500 miles, or do a complete 500 before switching back to synthetic?

Are these motors pre- run at the factory now and therefore the rings are already sealed? Is the breaking mostly for your drive train now?

My break in:

After 900 miles, check the oil, lower the pressure in the rear tires, and take it to the drag strip.

This was the recommended break-in in the Tracking thread section.

So far it's been there 5 times and it now has about 30 runs under it's belt at 1,800 miles.

It gets faster every time I go. It's like driving around is a mod!

For those who are too busy to perform extra steps, or just dont care - follow the mfr process.

And for those that want the best long term performance, follow SC2150's advice. What harm is there in taking extra steps?
(eco pussies need not reply)

You do realize mfr wants you to gently use your car to reduce risk of warranty services. Casually drive it to 5yr/100k until they are off the hook.

My 1LE saw 6k rpms several times around the 25 mile mark.

Drives real smooth now and sounds fracking amazing with LTs and high flow cats through the NPP exhaust.

The first 30 miles or so I did not do any full throttle starts (from a stop) or burnouts but still drove moderately. Then I drove it aggressively for about 75 miles never doing the same speed slow or fast. Several 5/8 throttle runs to about 4500 RPM or so. Then I'd let it cool. Then went out again and did more runs to about 5000 RPM till about 200 miles or so. And then after that went to the track (road course) at about 450 miles and really opened her up but still not to 6000 maybe 5000-5500. My car seems to be pretty quick now but have not been to a dyno yet. I also did the fuse pull at about 200 miles and I did not notice any power increase at the first tank refill. Might try that again but I think my car has been pretty good so far. I do notice it shakes pretty good when at idle but it seems that is normal? I will change the oil soon at 1000-1200 miles.

I followed the manual (no oil burning post break in with aggressive driving between changes) but am a firm believer in city driving first few miles. The acceleration helps seat the rings and the varied speeds help with the rest of the drivetrain.

My idle didn't really get to where it wouldn't miss until about 5K miles. I reseated the airbox and tube, but my theory is that the factory gets sloppy with the dielectric grease in the sparkplug boots, and it takes that long to run off the connections. I pulled a boot off and the green goo was caked all over the sparkplug.

I have about 400mi on my 1LE now and have been doing a moderately hard break in, not staying constant speed and getting on it often.
What oil/ filter are you guys using, I should change it soon (~1000 mi)

Awesome break in. That should be in the owners manual. TEMP TAG RACING FTW break in for me too, anyone else?

We should start a Temp Tag racing thread for new 1LE owners.

I think they mean Temporary plate provided by the dealer.

This. Temp tags get you respect in the staging lanes. But two weeks ago a new ZL1 owner did us all one better. He drove directly from the dealer after delivery to the Test and Tune.

Break in

According to one of the two engineers who actually designed the 1le package (chassis dynamics and stability) and is the husband of my wife's friend and also owns a 1le, he advised me to break in the car as follows to avoid rear differential whine later:

Drive the car gently, under 3000 rpm with no sudden launches, hard shifts or extreme downshifts for at least 500 miles. Gradually increase rpm to 4,000 max for about another 500 miles. Use the provided oil and follow the maintenance schedule. After 1000 miles the car will be broken in.

You can do what you want, but he developed this model, has driven hundreds of them on the road and on tracks and I believe he knows what he is talking about.

My break in was driving off the dealer lot and taking it on hwy 49 for some mountain twistys. Then off to the highway for some pulls. Already have 2 road course events planned. Have seen the rev limiter more times than I can count. Shift at 4000rpm. In the meantime I wi be doing as much curvy driving as I can fit in. At 1000-1500 miles I will dump the engine oil and diff oil and repeat the process until 5000 miles. After that this car will be properly broken in.

I drove "swiftly" but not abusive right off the lot. That included pulls on the freeway and close to redline shifts.

The oil was changed at about 800 miles and the car was on a road course, Dyno and drag strip between 1000 and 1300 mile. I now have over 5500 mile on the car, 4 tracks days and many mile of hard driving. There is no smoke and the car does not even sip any oil at all.

To each their own.

Matt

Matt, were you running with temporary tags at the strip? If so you are an automatic member of the Temp Tag Racing team.

I will have to look into getting some jackets, patches and refrigerator magnets made up.

Well at the very least a jpeg for sigs.
