No-lift Shifting in the Camaro ZL1 (Automobile)

No-lift shift isnít new to GM. The Chevrolet Cobalt SS and HHR SS had it, the Buick Regal GS and the Cadillac CTS-V have it, but the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 wears it best.

Imagine youíre at a drag strip. You put the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 stability system into Race mode, inch up to the starting line until you fully stage, then put your right foot flat onto the accelerator pedal to turn on launch control. After the engine figures out what rpm to launch at, you ease your foot off of the clutch to go. The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 charges forward, the tachometerís needle approaches redline, and itís time to shift. This is usually when youíd take your right foot off of the accelerator pedal, push the clutch pedal in with your left foot, shift into second gear, raise your left off of the clutch, and slam your right foot down onto the accelerator pedal againóbut thatís not whatís going to happen this time.

With your right foot firmly planted on the accelerator pedal, your left foot hovers just above the clutch pedal. Then you start to push down it. For a second, every muscle in your body tenses off as you imagine obliterating the supercharged V-8 engine or the 6-speed manual transmission by doing what youíre about to do. Then you remind yourself that this engine is tuned for no-lift shifts. If you donít use the feature, the supercharger wonít maintain boost between gears. So you ram your left foot down onto the clutch pedal, thereís a loud blat from the exhaust, your right hand yanks the transmission into second gear, and you get your left foot off of the accelerator as fast as you can. The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 surges forward, completely unscathed. Ditto for the next two shifts. As you cross the finish line in just over twelve seconds, you realize that the accelerator pedal has been on the floor since the start of your quarter-mile run.

The factory rev limiter still works with no lift shift.

I use that technique all the time (keep the gas pedal on the floor, stab the clutch, and shift quickly), and have been doing so for decades, when I want to get the best times out of a car. What did they do to the ZL1 that's different?

If you're quick, power shifting is something all M6 guys are used to at the track; I guess you have a bit more time to do that without it hitting the rev limiter with this system. Does it use the same setup of dropping fuel to cylinders to keep the rev's from rising as in the launch control?

Is this only in the ZL1, or is this in the SS as well. My previous car had this feature and my 1LE SS won't be ready for delivery until the end of next month. I have been wondering if this works on the SS?


**EDIT**
I saw the previous post so I assume this is something specific with the M6 transmission which would mean it will work in the SS model???

With the conventional method of power-shifting, if you shift fast enough, all is good. If you miss a gear, the engine will continue to rev right on up.

At high RPM, my SS won't go into 2nd without grinding even with a lift-shift. I can't imagine what horrors await with a no-lift-shift.

we have had clutchless full throttle shifts on motorcycles for years not sure why with all the electronics they couldn't do the same for a car.

we put a sensor in the shifter linkage the cuts the ignition for a split second and allows it to slip into the next gear. full throttle the entire time no clutch needed.

All ZL1's have no lift shift ! So yes the 12, 13, and 14 are equipped to do it!

It will not. The SS is a LS3 N/A engine, therefore there's no reason to keep the boost(cause it doesn't build any) between shifts. The ZL1 is supercharged and therefore holds the boost between shifts instead of loosing it. My Cobalt SS T/C is the same.

and cooling. with the diff,oil, trans, and intercoolers being up front the '14 and up front isnt the best. They did function before form in 2014...

I used the piss outta that feature(no lift shift) on my Turbo cobalt. I embarassed countless Mustang GTs (pre 5.0) and shocked some GTslows(GTOs)
