L99 (best mode for racing?)

What's the best transmission mode for drag racing?

I would like to hear from the guys that are running good times what computer transmission mode you're using.

1. D - (regular drive)
2. M - (sport mode)
3. M- (sport mode using paddle shifters)
4. Competitive mode (8-37 in the owners manual) -press TCS button two times quickly.

Tried each and every one of those combos last night... wish I had time to complile all the numbers... maybe this evening...

The winner was S Mode... Competitive Mode... No paddle shifters although others like to have everything off.

Reasons were with T/C off I got wheel spin once off the line and another time using tap shift from 1st to 2nd. When I had T/C off and got no wheel spin I ran the exact same time as with T/C on. (so I prefer to be safe and leave it on - comp mode)

Tap shift will take lots of practice becuse it's soooo slow to react. You have to anticipate the tap so it can really screw up a a good run (but save your motor...) I gained nothing using it during a perfect run except for a chance to shift late and lose time.

One more note... it's easier to have everything off when coming to the line... That way you can do a burnout and just pull up to the line rather than stop to double tap back to comp mode. I still prefer Comp mode

Sport mode is a gear selection option (D, S, or M are available).
Competitive Mode is a tractio/stability control option which turns traction off and leave stability on.

So how do I get it to stay in 1st or 2nd gear to take it up to 3 or 4000 rpm and let it back down, it shift's on me?

Actually traction is still on but will let the car spin a little more than with out.

You have to use the paddle shifters to keep the car in a gear. They are on the back of the steering wheel.

I would also like to add, once you touch the tap shifters in M- Sport mode (it switches you over to manual mode). You must now shift the car yourself until you move the shifter back up to D (regular drive).

When I'm done using the paddle shifters, I move the shifter quickly up to D and then back to M (Sport mode). I pretty much use M (Sport mode) for most of my daily driving. I rarely use the paddle shifters. But sometimes the paddel shifters are fun to play with. I also like using the paddle shifters when I want to hold first gear when rolling slowly off the line.

And make sure you time the shifts properly when using the paddle shifters. There's a slight delay on the shifts so you can end up hitting the fuel cut off/redline if you're not paying close attention to your rpms.

Have fun, but Texas in the summer can be tuff on track times. I know some guys with late model GTO's that live in the Dallas area and they run pretty slow times this time of year.

You want to run it in M mode in the 1/4 mile. It cut the time by .4 vs just D

this is good to know i was wondering why mine shifted on its ownin m mode still. At a stop it says s then i take off and it shifted on me. But when i try it in paddle up from the s it was ok just didnt know thats what it was lol thought s meant from a stop lol. I was like whats the point in the paddles.

Well....I run sport mode with all nannies off. Everyone of those others slow me down. I have upgraded all my rear bushings and trailing arms and run DRs, so no wheel hop and no spin.

You know you don't have to shift from M to D to get out of the paddle shift setting. Just hold the + shifter for a few seconds and it will revert back to M Auto
