Update - After a gear break-in period consisting of roughly 10 progressive (20 minute) heat cycle sessions followed by a complete cool down and approximately a thousand total miles since I installed the 3.91's, I replaced the fluid in the rear end. I found the same heavy micro metallic build up on the mag plug that I had after breaking in the original gears. Another quart of royal purple and she is good to go.

I've built close to 100 motors for myself and friends - they are all about the same except each has different needs for hand porting of cylinder heads (CNC machines will never equal old fashioned labor and flowbench testing). I NEVER tore into ring and pinion installation or automatic transmissions rebuilding. Automatic tranny's have too many subtle mods that only experience can handle. Ring and pinion gears cost too much to replace if they whine. On a 750+ HP drag race car, it's no big deal as the gears lasted one season due to being made of soft metal to prevent shattering. I'd rather have a place such as Ft Worth Gear and Axle handle it. If it whines...THEY buy the new gears and install them, while I have a few cold ones.

I applaud you for replacing your own gears.

Us old school guys had to change the transmission speedo drive to get a proper speedometer reading. What needs to be done to a 2014 SS (manual transmission) to keep a properly reading speedometer when changing to a 3.91 gear?

I had 5.14 gears in my 1962 Chevy II I built 24 years ago. They didn't make speedo drives for that low of a gear.

You would basically need a tune I.e. Reflashing the ecu except that you would only have to change the rear drive ratio and that would be all. You wouldn't even have to pull the negative on the battery.

UPDATE - I have over 3,500 miles on the gears now including 2 track sessions at Houston MSR. No issues to report and still very happy with the gears. I do admit that I can find the rev limiter a lot faster if I'm not paying attention to my shift points ;-) but I'll take it!

Its cost effective if you can afford it yea. spending $400 on gears and swapping them yourself will be a whole hell of a lot cheaper than spending $1600 on a 1LE diff.

does anyone know the specification or if there is a spec for rotational torque measured at the pinon with side bearing pre-load after the side bearing caps are re-installed/torqued down to spec? thanks!

thanks, i ended up just setting the torque the same way that was shown in this thread any how. worked out fine.
i will say on mine it was a huge process getting the pinon pressed in and out and in took a lot more than just a little hammer. i had to use a hydrualic press to do it. but the freezer/bbq worked really well. the ring gear and the pinon bearing basically just fell together under their own weight. took me about a day and a half taking my time. i would not say this job was easy. haha, but its definitly doable . i dont really see why so many people are so afraid to do this themselves. this was my first time doing gears and im glad i did. all i used was this thread, a chilton guide and a little youtube .

My speedo was off i think around 5-6 mph but it didnt throw any stabilitrac codes or anything, i used a hypertech speedo calibrator to recalibrate. although it doesnt have 3.91:1 so i set it to 4.10 and messed around with the tire size a little to get the last 2-3 mph difference.

thank you for posting this for all of us it would of been a lot more guess work with out it for sure. i cant tell you how many threads i found on diy gear swaps that said dont even attempt to diy. anyways, good luck to any one else out there attempting this. my advice is be patient and make sure you have all the right tools, check and re check everything.
