However I would advise a real USGI example if anyone's in the market. These were only ever made during WWII. My own '43 Inland doesn't even really need to be lubricated much. Very accurate out to 100 yards, too. For home defense, I'd suggest making sure to get a rotary safety instead of the original type push safety.

I realize that commercial M1 carbines are not as bad as they used to be and some are good but I still don't get a warm fuzzy from them. The originals are still workhorse rifles and USGI ammo was never corrosive type. I wish ammo was cheaper and more available for them. The M1 carbine sights are just about perfect for me. I love my M1 rifle and the 1903A4gery I built, but the M1 carbine is a lot of fun to shoot and easy to become proficient with

A shorter barreled pump 20 gauge or even .410 would make great home defense. Gotta think that you will be point-blank to 20 feet or so from target..... Either of those will do just fine at that range, plus be more manageable.

I don't know about "cool", but I picked up a Remington 870 Express Tactical last week...

This has probably been mentioned I searched but what are your opinions on Gunbroker? I'm trying to buy a pistol but I'm TDY and on these orders cannot buy a pistol where I am.

So I was thinking of ordering off GunBroker and having it shipped to the city I live and during Thanksgiving or Christmas when I go back on leave picking it up then dropping it off with the family.

Thoughts?

Gun Broker is very thorough. They ask i think for you to pay by a gun service site instead of like paypal. The funds arent released until you actual pick the gun up as well.

I may not be 100% correct but I think I am.

Seeing that picture made me think I should get a stripped lower or 2, but then I realized that the last one I got is still sitting around somewhere in its box... I need to get on it!

You haven't considered it because you don't feel it's a viable HD rifle?

It's not the usual choice but if I had one, I wouldn't feel uncomfortable using it. Better than my AR15 with its magazine lock.

Ruger LC9 or Keltec P3AT. Most all .380s are going to be around the same weight. I can't think of a lighter 9mm than the Ruger, I think the Shield is heavier but its close.

No, but I feel it's not optimum certainly. Several handguns and shotguns would come to mind before the M1 carbine. I wouldn't consider an AR15, either. I'd reach for my P226 before my M1 carbine or AR15. I can phone the police while holding my P226, or open a door, window, etc. While it's true I can physically hold up both my M1 carbine and my AR15 with one hand at arm's length, I don't think pulling the trigger in that situation would be a good idea.

I agree it's not the best choice but, for some people who can't shoot a hand gun well under stress or handle the recoil of a shot gun, it is an option.

Yep just bought a super old school flint lock. Old British Dragoon pistol, smooth bore, no rifling on the barrel. Its super cool. Got it in case I go muzzle loading hunting with my nephew.

About a month ago, I bought the new (as of this year) Taurus pt111 Millennium G2. I never really trusted Taurus for semi-autos before, but heard good things and the price was right. It is THE sweetest shooting, most comfortably gripped little CCW 9mm I've ever carried on my waist. I have a S&W m&p9c and a Shield, both outstanding for CCW, but even so I grab the G2 to put in my waistband when I head out ever since I've gotten it. This isn't a sales pitch for Taurus by any means, but if anyone was on the fence about this gun or interested in a cheap ($350) CCW gun, it's an amazing little under-dog.

Can anyone speak on the difference between vertical fore grips as opposed to angled ones? I have a vertical on my Saiga right now but I was reading up on the angled ones. I'm curious if anyone actually has any experience with them.
