I knew the Stingray wouldn't win, but I do think everyone is surprised by the CTS.

I'm a little surprised as well, considering what it was up against. 4-series and S-class are both compelling cases.

Congrats to the Cadillac team. And this speaks volumes of the Alpha chassis and is only good news for the 6th gen.

Performance wagons are not, in anyway, 'mainstream'

Yeah, Corvettes tend not to win Car of the Year. I think it only won once, for the C4. But the CTS isn't much of a surprise for me. Looking through the criteria for CotY, Design, Engineering Excellence, Performance of Intended Function ... it makes a lot of sense.

Car and Driver just compared luxury midsize sedans and CTS beat 5-series and E-class, losing only to the A6.

I don't see it happening. If anything, I'd expect them to go bigger, rather than smaller to hit 500. We shall see.

I just don't get why they wouldn't use the LF3 3.6. That engine is built stout and ready for abuse. They could easily get another 20 - 30 HP and 30 - 50 TQ out of it with just a more aggressive tune. Never in recent history has there been a factory turbo forced induction engine that was anywhere near the output of what it can do with a 3rd party tune.

Now I'm not saying GM should go nuts and give it an aggressive un-safe tune that pushes the limits....just pull in the reins a bit less is all I'm saying. Something around 450/450 in that little ATS would be freaking amazing.

If GM does indeed go with a different motor simply for the fact that the LF3 isn't a good base for power that is pretty disappointing to me.

GM powertrain has a different set of rules that they have to play by than the aftermarket. Some of them are internal (such as engine longevity), some of them are external (emissions). But different none the less.

I understand that. I'm sure that is the reason. It just seems crazy to me that they can't just add a couple psi of boost and be done with it and still maintain basically the same reliability, emissions, and fuel efficiency.

Oh wells...

Well ... if they could increase output without harming reliability, emissions, and fuel economy (among all the other factors that they keep in balance) I'm sure they would. Better engine, with no sacrifice? Awesome, who doesn't like a free lunch. But since they don't do it, I'd say its a safe bet that adding 'just a couple' psi of boost would have enough of an impact on those other things to break at least one of those 'rules'

You must be correct...if in fact they use a different engine for the ATS-V. I can totally agree with you.

I'm still waiting on someone to get their hands on an LF3 CTS and do an aftermarket tune and see what kind of power can be had. I've read IPF has their hands on one, so I hope to see their results soon.
