First of all your speculating on a crash that happened in the past, with static variables that can no longer be changed. Which means your opinion is baseless and unfounded.

Also, airbags deploying doesn't "total" your car.

Furthermore, I'd love to see any supporting evidence that airbags are ineffective.

Thanks.

I never said airbags were ineffective, I said they not necessary in most cases. If given a choice I not order them.
Last fall, a brand new BMW 3-series car rolled into the Old Dominion Carstar Collision Center in Eugene, Ore. - literally. A teenager was "driving dad's car," says shop owner Patty McConnell, and rolled it over - with little apparent structural damage. The teen walked away, and normally the damage wouldn't have been hard to repair. But the BMW had so many air bags "it looked like a balloon," recalls Ms. McConnell. The new car, worth more than $30,000, was totaled.

Costly air bags, expensive electronics, and lightweight body materials are driving up the cost of fixing new cars. Not only do many more parts have to be replaced rather than repaired, but fewer and fewer body shops can afford the special equipment and training required to do the work."We're moving closer and closer to the disposable car," says Dan Bailey, an executive vice president at Carstar, the largest auto-body repair franchise in the United States.

Repairing a new car a decade ago, for example, cost an average of $2,578 per claim, while in 2003, the cost had ballooned to $3,681, a 43 percent increase that has outpaced inflation, says Kim Hazelbaker, senior vice president and head of loss claims analysis with the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) in Arlington, Va.

Normally it takes a lot of damage to total a brand-new vehicle. Insurance companies calculate the value of a car before the accident and subtract its value as scrap. As long as the result is more than the cost of repair, the car is worth fixing.

But many new cars today cost so much to fix that it's becoming harder to justify repairs. The BMW that hit McConnell's shop had dual front, side, and side- curtain air bags. Federal safety rules do not allow air bags to be reused. So each bag would have had to be replaced with a brand new one. The sensors and pyrotechnics that set them off also required replacement. Add the cost of labor, more than $1,000 for each air bag, and even more for the sensors, and the result is a totaled car.

a car is totaled at 65% of its value. Air bags total most older cars.

My car was totaled at 80% of current market value. As a former body shop owner I'm certain it can/will be repaired but my buy-out was $8414(w/salvage title) which was too rich for my pockets as I'm ready to move forward. I bet it will auction for quite a bit more as it was a highly optioned car and the 17K mile drive train is very desirable. While overall accident repair costs are up, medical claims costs are trending stable or downward due to multiple safety solutions thus the auto insurance industry would much prefer the current existing situation.

I am VERY grateful my Camaro had both multiple airbag systems and a 5 star frontal crash rating. Without them I would be lucky to be alive and considerably worse off at best. I'm glad we weren't in our 2002 Formula!!

barrel-rolling down the road = "leaving her lane". I think that is kind of mild of how you described it.

Glad everyone is okay, as those kind of accidents usually end up with horrible news or injuries. Very thankful you and family are okay.

What totals most cars today is not that it has all the airbags but because of the unit body construction they are designed to distribute the impact forces throughout the structure so the outside damage is just the tip of the iceberg so to speak, it's what you can't see that totals them out.

OP glad you are ok. I was in a accident in 1993 and my car only had one airbag. It saved me from any injuries at all. I hit a 1963 Ford Galaxie with my 93 Saturn SC2. Did over $6300 damage to my Saturn.

"leaving her lane and causing an accident" was the policeman's legal term used on the citation issued.

The citation was probably written like that because "excessive speed for conditions" won't be established until somebody reads the black box. Even then, it may be difficult to establish whether road conditions (wet or otherwise slippery), vehicle capability limits (SUV and its condition), or insufficient driver skill (with respect to executing extreme maneuvers) was the immediate cause of her leaving her lane. Or something else.

Glad to hear you folks managed to come out of it as well as you did.

Glad that stupid driver of the Cadillac didn't kill anyone else. Can't say as I feel sorry for whatever injury she suffered, herself.

You beat me to it. Is that sign really necessary? I sure hope there aren't people working there that need a sign to tell the pre-test from the post-test cars.

That wrecked Camaro does look like it has a crazy smile on it's face too.

I was considering a 2014 LS Camaro despite not being to keen on the restyle, but surprisingly my family seems fairly intrigued by the 2014 Volt. If I can lease one cheap enough I might bite as my wife would use ZERO gas on her daily work commute. Then I can save up for a C7 Vette!!

There are still a lot of unsold 2013 Volts on the lots, they are discountinging them a lot. I think I saw one advertised for $25K last week, but that probably included the federal tax rebate.

SRX folks fared well. Seatbelts & side airbags saved them. No frontal bags deployed as nose had no impact.

At least everyone is ok. The Volt is a nice car. I test drove one with my father and the torque is really nice. Doesn't fell like a typical hybrid. $229 for a 2014 LS sounds attractive. Would it be weird to have an LS for the winter months and my SS for the summer? lol
