Ryan has said on here that you can run his SS2 VVT cam with a stock stall. If you're racing, you'll want a stall but it's not needed. If you are planning a stall, go for his SS3 VVT cam and make 100+whp more. I think Ryan was around 480whp when he was running his SS3 cam. More importantly, he was running 10's with it. That's stock bottom and heads with zero suspension mods.

If you are drag racing, you'll appreciate having the L99 more. In addition to better consistency, you get to save a LOT of $$ on suspension mods. If you have any doubts, go look at the 1/4 fast list. Once you start modding, the automatics DOMINATE the top spots.

So is it you don't want to do a cam swap for your l99? Look at it this way, the bottom end of the engines are the same and the top end the lifters are different, valley cover, and front timing cover. A kit can be put together for under 300 to make the conversion if you don't decide to go aftermarket cam and arp head bolts or studs. It boils down to the point of wanting an auto or manual transmission. Considering the cost of trading in and losing because of the dealer I would just do a cam swap with ls3 setup.

What does your car run now?

I'd do the stall now, get used to that. Cam next.

I've always had more luck drag racing auto cars. I also had a 02 Z06 for a few years, and never modded it. Folks asked me why, but it was a handful to hook and wheelhopped bad if I beat on it. But it was fun from a 40 roll.

I am not the quickest L99, but I've done a decent job of maxing out different combos...

Bone stock went 13.15@106, took about 15 tries. I could help any of you guys do better if you are local.

Under drive, headers, cats, 20" drag radials, tune, air intake.... 12.37@112. 20's up front. I think I could have worked that down a bit more.

Added a 3200 Circle D stall, ADM cooler, re-tune, RCR ported intake, 12.06 and best mph of 113.6. I'm sticking with this until it runs 11.9 (11.7 is my secret goal but I bet skinnies will be needed).

The heads, cam, and going for 11.2 to 10.99.

11.8 is +cam territory for a stick car. So hard to make those combos work.

Tracks are slow here...DA is terrible ...13.3 1/4 headers and tune, 8.58 in 1/8th after DR's. Had tune updated and adjusted now so hoping to break into 12s here.

Only get a stick if it's the transmission you're after...doing it just to save money on a cam install would not be worth it in my opinion.

You don't have to change the stall if you don't want to...we just picked up 87 rwhp from heads/cam on an L99, designed the cam to keep the stock converter.

I think there are a number of advantages when modding the the L99, especially with VVT cams, mild-wild. The L99 trans has some aggressive gear ratios, for instance, 4th gear is ~1.2x3.27=~3.92; that's 1LE territory.

I'm also looking at a cam change as my next significant engine mod, but the Camaro will be set-up for road courses, including FE3-FE4 suspension with ZL1 spec sways.

Since I'll be getting into the engine, going to 4.00" stroke (416ci) seems reasonable for my goals. Using Cordes in Mesa as a builder, will be using Ed Curtis to spec a billet core Lunati VVT camshaft, plus a Circle D single disc converter specified to my goals.

When built, this engine will easily make 500rwhp, but there's more with a VVT cam. Being able to advance low rpm timing increases low end power, same is true when retarding top end rpms. What is significant here is the amount of HP gains after peak HP has been reached. One article I read stated 41hp gain after peak HP, there's a lot more HP gains after peak with a VVT cam compared to LS3 designs.

Huitt what track you race at? If it's high altitude, everyone is comparatively slower.

There was a shop near me offering LS3 conversion and Cam + Labor for right around 3k... I'd shop around.
