New OnStar capability with your new 2010 Camaro

OnStar is expanding on its Stolen Vehicle Assistance services with the announcement of a new technology that will give law enforcement another critical tool to help safely and quickly recover subscribers stolen vehicles. This new technology is called Remote Ignition Block and will allow an OnStar Advisor to send a remote signal to a subscriber's stolen vehicle to prevent the vehicle from restarting once the ignition is turned off.

Looks like I might keep that service subscription after the 1-year "trial" runs out...

How much does OnStar cost to have?

only issue is that if the robbers trash your car do you want it back...you'd have to notice it quickly...

if they trash it you'd be better off if they took your vehicle out of state and you get a brand new one payed for by insurance

I'd be stupid to not use the OnStar the car comes with after I get it, after paying so much money for the car itself. Looks like the new feature will be available with the cheaper Safe N Sound plan. I don't need the Directions + Connections because I already have a cell phone that does exactly that. It's worth the money for $300 a year..

How long do you think it would take a robber to disengage the OnStar system in your car, rendering it useless? Is it something as simple as cutting a wire or is it pretty much unstoppable and fully integrated into the car?

What if the criminal leaves the car running? Any way they can make the car stall out if the criminal decides to try and leave the car running to avoid something like this?

That's great. Now all the criminals have to do is figure a way to disconnect ONSTAR from power.

Or cut the battery cables and tow it.

wrong, onstar has a short term power supply, if i'm not mistaken. disconnect doesn't help the bad guys. these days, you need a towtruck, and concrete bunker to hide it in.

so should one consider LoJack if OnStar can do this ? Keep in mind that OnStar works only with "line of sight"... Meaning, if that you are underground, OnStar may not be able to connect right ?

Thanks.

Scotty,
I heard that Chevy dealerships are now selling LoJack with new cars....Regardless if that's true or not, is OnStar considered as good as LoJack ? In my opinion, LoJack is better because it has it's own power supply....And its registered with the Police.. And they have 'recovery guaranteed' with paying deductiables for you if your car is not recovered in 24 hours. I don't see OnStar offering that (yet).

I'm not saying OnStar is awful, I currently have it and I'm paying monthly charges for it, I'm just saying from a theft point of view. Is LoJack better ?

Your thoughts are welcomed sir.

Brian

This is probably a really stupid question, as I seem to have a penchant for asking them. Anyway, for those of us who already have our camaros and are subscribing to onstar, will we have to have additional equipment for the ignition block or is it already set up for it? (okay, you can laugh now)

Thanks for the OnStar update but....

I would much rather have technology to remotely shut down the engine while it's running. If my car gets jacked here in the Phoenix metro area, in 3 hours it's in Mexico. Thieves aren't going to turn off the ignition until they cross the border - too late for existing OnStar technology to work.
