Thanks for the great write up. My Firehawk has an LS1 engine, and I was expecting this oil change to be similar. I came here to check, and I'm glad I did.

I'd like to make a couple of comments. My old car was a Porsche Boxster, 1999. Those cars had some serious design flaws related to oiling. As a result, a lot of testing and research was done by a few good Porsche repair shops (independant). The consensus was overwhelmingly that the best synthetic oil to use is Castrol with Syntec (black bottle). Mobil 1 used to be the best, but a long time ago, they changed the formula. It is now mediocre. The new formula saves them money, but doesn't change the price. Stuff like Royal Purple and Amsoil can be good, but tend to be very inconsistent in their makeup. I now only use Castrol with Syntec.

I also use some aluminum tape to tape an old hard drive magnet (rare earth magnet) to the side of my oil filter housings. This is a road racer trick. It helps trap any metal bits that may be in the oil, and makes it pretty obvious when abnormal wear goes on.

Thanks again for the write-up. Off to change the oil and wash the car for the first time.

I helped my buddy change the oil on his 2012, these instructions look solid, good job.

Great instructions with many helpful photos.

I posted yesterday that I could not remove the oil filter housing. I believe that either the dealer, who did the last oil change, either tightened it too much or forgot to put in the O-ring. Anyway, we're going back to the dealer this week to get him to change the oil and not ultra-tighten the housing this time.

For future reference, the V-6 oil filter housing cap o-ring is GM# 12577653, same # AC Delco. They can be expensive @ a local chevy dealer, I got 3 off ebay for $4.63 each delivered to my door.
The AC Delco oil filter PF2129 is made in the good ole USA.

I successfully changed the oil on my V6 this time. The first time, I couldn't remove the oil filter housing. This time I came prepared with a 3/8" breaker bar wrench along with my 24 mm socket. I warmed the car up until the engine temperature read 110 degrees. The housing came off nice and easy this time. I drained the oil while the front of the car was up on ramps.

I have a question. I check the dipstick before the oil change. The reading shows full. I drain the oil and replace the filter when the draining goes to a trickle. When I pour the drained oil back into the empty oil container, it shows that I've drained about 1 to 1.5 quarts less than the amount I've added. In this case, I drained 3.5 quarts and added 5.5. I suppose the oil filter accounts for an additional 0.5 quarts which brings it to 4.0. I know the car was not low on oil. I know that I haven't overfilled the car based on the dipstick reading. Not sure where the missing 1 to 1.5 quarts is aside from the inaccuracy of the dipstick.

This has happened with oil changes I've done on my old Celica and RAV4.

This is not a problem, mostly just trying to logically account for oil out = oil in.

I had to change my oil (7500mi) but could not find the filter for weeks. It finally came in the mail but I changed my oil first. If I try to change the filter now would oil get all over the place? 250mi on it since the change.

Nah youll be ok. There will def be some oil in the filter. Just get a small bag or bucket thats ready to catch the oil filter when you pull it out. Make sure you oil up your new filter by dumping some oil into it.

I got the filter from Advanced Auto Parts FWIW.

Thanks! Going to try it tonight! Hopefully it comes off easily as I have heard and read stories about it being over torqued or missing an O ring.

A 15/16-inch 12 point socket also works perfectly, as I found out this afternoon. 15-16-inch converts to 23.8 mm. Interestingly enough, that is the same socket that I used to remove the top of the oil filter housing on the '08 Saturn Astra that I traded in on the Camaro. Also found out that the PF2130 filter that I got from the dealer is a PF2129 filter (which is the one that the manual recommends) with a new O-ring in a separate package.
