Cam recommendations?

So, full disclosure I am more familiar with cams for older vehicles, flat tappets Etc...

I have a 2010 L99, MBRP catback, CAI by C.A.I and catted ARH tubes. I am considering a cam upgrade but do not want the obnoxious cam lope, as this is more of a daily driver and not one sees the drag strip as often as I would like.

Is there a cam out there that will give a 25 to 30 horse gain while maintaining the stock exhaust character? Smooth and baritone versus crackly/poppy?

ask me to help build a 412ci or a 418ci and I am good, more modern engines and I am a touch out of my league

PCM of North Carolina has a nice one that will fit what you're looking for (IMO).

http://www.pcmofnc.com/index.php/per...2x-050-114-lsa

There's a ton of youtube videos with idle clips.

You can still get a good sized cam. As a matter of fact I would recommend that you don't go too small. You can tune your lope to suit as long as you don't go huge. I can almost smooth my cam out with 10* of overlap by adding timing at idle. I would think at around 5* of overlap you should be able to get what you want. Respectable power, great driveability, and tame sounding.

SpeedIsLife I too have the MBRP 3 inch XP with long tubes and HF cats ( M 6 LS3 ). Doe's yours have the resonator center x pipe or the X pipe without . I have some drone at 1700 to 1900 with the X pipe center section . I love the very deep hollow sound with no rasp of the MBRP ,but could do with less drone between 1700 and 1900 .

You want a cam but don't want much cam lope?

That's like saying you want turbos but don't want them to boost.

no disrespect at all op because it is your car and your money but the main purpose of a cam is for power gain AND a nice choppy lope lol. Its like saying you want a 21 y/o cheer leader but fully clothed from neck to toe with a heavy winter coat on top.

A big cam will ruin drivability. I have a stock stall in my 5th gen and a big cam and I have to fight with the brakes when sitting in traffic.

And what did we learn? You bump up the cam you need to bump up the converter.

You don't have to have the lopey idle and irritating manners of a small lsa, large lift/long duration cam.

Check out some of Ligenfelter's cams. Very smooth idle and great street manners while making big power.

Considering that a cam swap on a l99 isnt cheap might as well go with something thats gonna give you more power. I sure GPI or Lethal can work something up for your needs.

I was on the same boat with my cam but I have a ls3. At first I wanted something tame and was worried about drivability. But I figured I might as well get the most out of it while im doing it. I ended up with the nightfury and it drives awesome and makes great power im glad with the turn out.

I feel you on the drivability part. Some people can live with surging and bucking and to me it just makes it a pain to drive the car. You can get a nice cam that you can drive and not have to "just deal with"

One recommendation is Ls9 cam, has a perfect smooth idle, you can even drop the Rpms down to 600 or so at idle to sip a little less gas, it's cheap (125$ for camshaft alone) and effective and will give you a very modest bump in power close to what you're hunting, while remaining perfect to drive. However there are plenty more options and ones that will get you more power without sacrifices.

I have a custom grind cam, I currently have it set to idle at 750 and it has a lil chop to it, but at 1,000 rpm it's smooth. You having an auto you could maybe eak out a bit more before you get the lope you don't want, but not sure how your auto would take it tho, not knowledgable about autos. LOW 220s intake and high 220s exhaust on a mid teen (15+) lsa should put you in the ballpark you want and you can set the lift to whatever your comfort is.

Personal experience of 3 cams in same motor(NOT a STOCK motor) on a 6-speed car:

236/246 110 lsa i made 485tq and 515hp couldn't drive below 2,000rpms without surging. I hated it. Couldn't use 6th gear ever even on highway the sob jerked around

The ls9 cam in same motor made 480tq and 485hp. Smooth like stock, perfect DD. But I knew I could go bigger...

Custom grind makes 525tq 505hp NO surging, daily drivable, and it's beast.

I did this myself for about $200 and then sold the stock cam, gear and bolt for $100. LS9 cam has a touch more lope than stock, but I also put on headers with no cats and it does pop some on deceleration. Given I see people are paying 5k to swap cams, could be the best value on any mod I have ever done.

There is a really good DIY on cam swaps in that section. I learned on SBCs and BB Mopars and this was the first time I opened up an LS engine, but I felt it was no big deal. Certainly a lot cleaner than the old junk yard motors we pulled back then.
