Brake fluid replacement

Forgive me Forum Police, but I've tried search...

I am going to replace my DOT3 with DOT4 in my ZL1.

How much fluid should I need to buy <initially> to make this fluid exchange?

2-3 of these... should have the ABS pump bled too to get out all the DOT3, this requires a tech 2 or special tool to complete properly

How much fluid is in the ABS pump? Would there be a problem if the two were mixed, ie. if the pump is not purged before adding dot 4?

We use and recommend the Motul RBF600. You'll need 3 pints to complete the job.

The fluid can be mixed. The Motul is compatible with DOT3 fluids. Also, a cheap way to flush the ABS is to go activate the ABS on a wet or gravel road, then give them another short bleed.

Feel free to call, PM or email me anytime with questions.

Best regards,

Tyler

ATE Blue is no longer legal in the states.... It is a great fluid. RBF600 is much more readily available

We need to find someone overseas that is willing to ship us ATE super blue. I really liked being able to alternate colors, makes bleeding the system easy.

They used to make the same fluid in yellow as well, then you could really tell when new fluid was there. All euro cars use this in my experience. I like the Motul as well, easier to find.

ATE Type 200 is the yellow version and you can still get it. The blue is outlawed because it isn't yellow/clear. You can get a liter for $20. I think the Motul has a higher boiling point by about 60 degrees.

Good to know. there's one down the street from me. I'll check it out. It's possible I'll just be going the SRF route next season.

Type 200 had the same wet and dry boiling points. It just doesn't have the blue dye.

The local Chevy dealer quoted me 125.00 for a brake system flush. (Didn't even ask what kind of car it was.) When I told the service writer I was supplying my own fluid, I think I blew his mind. He had to check with his manager and came back to say, we'll knock about 15.00 off then. So, 110.00 for a flush. Also, this dealer does not have a great reputation in the service department...

I called a local speed/mechanic shop that I have used in the past for other cars and he said he can't find the instructions for my ZL1, so he doesn't know if his tool would work. He's still checking. I trust him with my car, but I don't know if he'll be able to come through in time.

I'm 100% DIYer on my car, but this ABS bleed has me stumped. I can't take it to either of the aforementioned "shops", so I'm left to calling around until I find someone I've never used to work on the most important system in my car. I would really rather do this myself.

Anyone have any advice? And if you're in the northern VA area, do you have a shop that you absolutely and personally recommend?

Next track day is coming up fast. Thanks everyone.
