Roto-Fab CAI Install with Pics (5 Stars)

First of all, I want to take a minute to thank Mike at Roto-Fab for a few things.

1. For making what I think is the nicest CAI for the 2010 Camaro that I have seen.

2. For taking his time to respond to PMs and posts on the board and provide updates on his products.

3. This is the biggest thing to me when I'm in the garage at 9:30 on a Thursday and I have a problem. I sent Mike a PM and he doesn't write me back, he calls me to help me with my particular situation and to guide me through the resolution.

Yes, he is making money off all of our sales, but he could have just wrote me back tomorrow or told me to call him tomorrow. Customer service means a lot to me and alot of others. I'll definitely keep this in mind for recommending Roto-Fab to my friends and going back to them in the future for other product needs.

Now, I'm not gonna walk through the steps of the install, but Mike's directions are extremely clear and the install is almost intuitive if you just take your time and look at each step before you start throwing it on the car.

The only snag that I had was in getting the breather tube to release from the barbed fitting at the passenger valve cover. This is where Mike helped me out. On my particular car, I had to rotate the tube counter-clockwise 180 degrees to be able to see the small tab that has to be pushed to get the assembly to release from the barb. I took a close-up that you'll see when you scroll down. After talking to Mike, we think that they must not all be installed in the same position at the manufacturer. They only anticipate them having to be pushed on one time. Removal is someone else's problem.

As you can see, I opted for the black Air Box. I think this kit looks like it could have been a factory install.

And before anyone asks, no, I haven't even started the car after install. I want to take one more look at everything tomorrow just to make sure there are no loose connections, etc. I'll edit this tomorrow night after a test run.

I'm still undecided on my CAI but the more I contemplate my purchase, the more I start leaning toward Roto-Fab. They were the first CAI that I saw (along with their custom engine compartment pieces) and thought the craftsmanship looked top notch. After hearing more and more stories like this, it begins to solidify my decision. I've also gotten quick responses to my personal questions.

When installing this, do you have to remove the engine cover?

PS: That engine compartment looks soooooo much better once that large plastic excuse for an air intake is removed.

Yep, the engine cover has to be removed to allow for access to the breather tube on the passenger valve cover. Not a big deal.

I just went back out to take another look at it and I thought the same thing looking at the hulk of plastic laying in front of it.

I think you'll be happy with it.

Hey Scott,

Sorry, I can't give you HP and TRQ gains for this item alone as I've got the Doug Thorley shorties and a pair of Flowmaster Super 40s that were already installed, but, I can tell you this;

2. I took a clip tonight of start-up and idle up to 2500, but I have to wait for battery recharge to download it. Under a load though is where you really hear and feel for that matter this intake working. It's got a NICE sound under acceleration to me.

3. HELL YES!!! I had posted that my LS3 didn't really seem to be running like I expected in another thread, but damn this blast of air has really flipped a switch somewhere on my car. Granted, when I left for my test run tonight, the ambient air was 82 and when I got back it was around 77, but I've driven in these temps before tonight and it was never this responsive to me. I actually got a little uneasy feeling when I was taking a snaky on-ramp onto highway 40 tonight and then I looked down when I was merging and I was doing 92...............

4. I can't offer anything here.

I will also add that I also checked the difference in temperature between the air box and the engine bay and it was significantly noticeable. If I can remember, I'll check it with an infrared scope tomorrow.

I think anyone interested in a nice piece with obvious gains in the seat of the pants feel for HP and TRQ will be happy with this product.

I'm toying with not even getting a dyno tune now even though I know it will just make the gains that much better.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with our intake installation. We've done our best to produce a system that satisfies our customers in all aspects. That inlcudes packaging, installation, appearance, quality and performance.

I got one in the paint shop and will hopefully post it this weekend, once I do the install.

It's going on an L99 w/corsa cat-back ehxaust only. If I new of local dyno, I would do it.

I have to say the packaging of the unit was A+. Everything arrived in pristeen condition. Not only is the design sound, Roto-Fab is right all the way through the process!

Add my name to the list of HAPPY customers of Roto-Fab CAI's.

Why Roto-Fab? Good customer service, excellent product (plastic or metal), packaging, & fitment, mates up well to HP adding devices (future mod). If there are differences in CAI's, I believe they will be small and overcome by
$$ 1K of greenbacks!

Easy to follow color instructions, packaged hardware by usage, foam packed unit in box to avoid damage. Went together in under 1.5 hrs.

I will say instructions said to pull stock air box straight up and there will be some resistance........back studs gromet was pinched during install at factory and it was like screwed on. Resistance stopped when removing when plastic mounting ear decided to give up the fight! Had to unscrew the rubber gromet and metal washer. Not Roto-Fabs fault. Just something to watch for.

NICE !! I like how you modified the engine cover. That looks great and reduces any heat trapped underneath. I would like to see more details on this mod.

Looks good...

I have a question though, aside from the looks it seems to me that the oem intake with a high flow filter would be just as good. if not better. I say this in respect to the "cold air" part of the setup, or am I missing something here?

Looks, sound, and performance!

A good set of headers will get you a 15hp gain for around $600 plus installation. $400 or less for 10hp is a deal! Exhaust cat-back might get you another 12 for $1200. Less restrictions in air flow thought system = +HP. All the way from where it sucks it up to where it blows it out.

You will read claims of 10-20 hp gain with CAI's (Cold Air Intake). I would figure 10 to be conservative. Some people have posted that they only got 10hp gain with one of the mfgs on here that is wanting to challenge all comers. I think their air filter is a little on the small side. There box also allows for more eng. compartment(hot) air to get into the filter pick up area with holes and loose fitment to fender well.

Air and water will only travel as fast as the most constricting point will allow. Sprinkler systems are designed with 2 inch trunk line feeding water to 1/2 delivery lines and all the sprinkler get the water they need. Try pushing water through a 1/2 inch line into a 2 inch. The 1/2 limits the whole system.

Look at the stock box. You will notice a smallish rectangular opening where the air enters. It then necks down to a smaller tube section leading into the box. In the box it hits more obstructions and small spaces before hitting the filter itself. Look at the surface area of the stock filter. More surface area means better breathing.

You are right that a K&N filter will breath better than the stock filter, but it will do nothing about the other restrictions in the system. My CAI is a large filter with lots of surface area inside and out, notice the end is open as well. then a 6 inch opening at the filter travels through the unrestricted pipe to the 4.5 inch opening delivering air to the throttle body and VIOLA!

This is my simple explanation to what is a complicated situation, the quest for more speed with the same cubic inches.

Don't get me wrong - and your car looks great by the way - but Roto-Fab's lack what pretty much every other CAI on the market lacks... a lid, as in an actual airbox that keeps the air coming from a cold spot and not the engine bay... like a CAI should.

The design/function of the ADM Performance CAI is more in line with what a CAI should be.

As for your lack of lid statement, the hood becomes the lid in this installation. If you notice the weatherstripping around the top of the airbox. Mike with Roto-Fab has even mentioned in several places that you'll get a witness mark in the hood pad from where the airbox is sealing to it. I can assure you that the air in my Roto-Fab airbox is significantly cooler than the engine bay air.

The only pro over the RF to me is the MAF being relocated into the airbox. How much is that really going to change if the air entering the filter is already significantly cooler as it passes it? Also, honestly, I don't like the way the air-tube has to make multiple bends.

There are plenty of threads dedicated to each product so let's try and keep them in their respective places.

Right, using the hood as the seal is understood... certainly by me and probably by most. I also understand that it's not ideal simply because it depends on a non-connected part to obtain the seal. It's great you're getting an imprint from your own setup, but that's not true for most.

I've heard good things about Roto-Fab and I enjoyed reading your write up. To each there own though.
