Imagine a cap on a bottle. The pipe needs to be closed off on the end so the Helmholz Principle can do its work.

Oops, didn't realize Mach answered you. Mach used the circular piece that was drilled out to make the hole in the pipe. My guy used a torch to make the hole in mine, so he used some metal that was lying around to seal mine up.
