Your driver side chipping is identical to mine. I stopped mine from spreading by loosening the bolts and putting some 3M tape (only one side of adhesive) under the spoiler edge. I'm not wanting a complete trunk repaint because I'm scared that will be worse than just a touchup. |

Mine hadn't seen it either when I took mine in the first time....but when I called him back a week later and said it chipped again, he called GM. I told him today I appreciate his help...he even looked through this thread. Looks like my car will not be going in Monday as expected. GM did not get the part from the supplier in time...and it cannot be shipped over night, it will have to be shipped ground..ugh! Looks like the car will go in later next week some time. While out on a drive, I stopped at my local Chevy dealership. They have two Camaros on their lot... both 2SS models. So, out of curiosity, I took a business card out of my wallet and checked the spacing on the spoilers. One seemed to have appropriate spacing around the entire spoiler; the other had the passenger side of the spoiler in contact with the decklid. Looks like it's pretty much hit-or-miss on spacing...

For those who are wondering, I to had the paint chip issue. Marine Chevrolet in Jacksonville, NC was kind enough to address the issue head on. I got a rental for the week and they even painted my aftermarket spoiler and installed it under warranty. I couldn't ask for anything better. The only issue I had was there were scratches on my trunk lid that wasn't there before. They waxed/buffed everything it was back to new.

Rep from GM called my body shop manager and said they will be shipping new "double thickness" rubber washers to my dealership this week. I was suppose to take my car in today, but GM had not received the washers from the supplier, plus now they're going to be shipped by ground not over night as hoped. So it looks like my car will go back in later this week sometime. GM says this will work and that they started putting them on the camaros on the assembly line. I hope this works.

If they don't show up soon, you could hint to them that any hardware store also has the perfect rubber washers.
They should really come out with a slightly thicker mounting tape. Making the stud washers a bit thicker is kind of a band aid. The mounting tape strips on the outside edges is what is really supposed to keep the spoiler cushioned from touching the decklid. Putting just the rubber washers on the studs works if you are carefull not to put too much torque on the nuts. And pull back on the spoiler when tightening the outside nuts, will give the back edge a little more clearance. But those 3 mounting tape strips on each end really should be thicker to do it right. |

I wonder what the odds are of me having to take it back in a 3rd time.. |

My dealer claimed they never saw this before either, and it was a week since I picked her up! I then proceeded to show them 3 Camaros right on their lot witht he same paint chips... wonder if they'll fix or see if the customer will notice.

I would tell them to use new rubber washers on the 6 studs. They can either call GM Technical Assistance for theirs or any hardware store has 3/8 neoprene washers (they are the size of a nickel). When tightening down the two outside nuts (with blue loctite), use less torque than is called for and watch carefully that a gap is maintained. There is some slop in the decklid hole, so pulling back on the spoiler while tightening the nuts will give the back edge more clearance. The loctite will hold the nuts just fine, they really don't need to be as tight as called for. Over tightening them is what is crushing the gap. Then when you get the car back, open the trunk and look at the gap all along the spoiler back edge, especially above the RS/SS badge. It shouldn't be touching the decklid paint. When mine was too tight, I couldn't even slide a piece of paper in there. You should be able to slide a piece of paper in there about 1/8th to 1/4in deep where it will hit the mounting tape. If the paper won't go in that gap at all, it's too tight. |
