The only reason to hide behind the veil of a conference is if your team isn't earning recognition on it's own.
When John Blake was coaching (if you can call it that) at OU during the 90's, and we went 12-22 (our worst stint in history), I wasn't chanting BIG12-BIG12-BIG12 because Nebraska was fielding some of the best teams in the history of the sport. Even then, as a boy, I still cheered for my Sooners every Saturday as we got embarrassed on the field, hoping our fate would turn.
Says the Sooner fan! While I go BLUE! I respect the SEC due to the massive numbers they put up and always the amount of top 25 teams in the nation which play each other. Look at the rosters and statistics the level of play is GRADE AAA, of course, S&P will downgrade it if the Aggies come in with the cowbells. But hey thats life and we don't always get what we want and others always screw it up for us. Its just a proven fact that southeastern teams rule... go to the FCS and look at the Top 25...4 are from our Southern Conference Georgia Southern, Wofford, App. State, and Chattanooga. Go Figure! Nuff said...

On a side note...just because one team tends to dominate a conference doesn't mean anything other than the other teams suck there should be a nice rotation in a tough conference not total dominance or the dominate team needs to move up and play with the BIG FISHES~

That's fair but look at the SECs regular season out of conference record. It's not much better than the everyone elses. So to have a number of teams ranked is insignificant. And what numbers are you talking about?

Rotating 3 teams at the top isn't much different than anyone else. Auburn being an annomily which doesn't say much for a conference when ONE GUY can come in and rule the conference with crazy offense.

FTR, I never said the SEC was NOT the best. Just not every year and certainly not to the level that gets stated. At one point recently the Big 12 had 6 or 7 temas ranked and SEC fans just said the polsters are idiots. LMMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's comical.

Umm the statistics would disagree with you there. Only one SEC team finished in the top 10 in total offense last season (Auburn obviously).
But you'll say "oh but the defense is second to none". Again, you'd be mistaken, only one SEC team in the top 10 last season (not Auburn lol)

I forgot strength of schedule was so much tougher in the SEC...oh wait, none of the SEC teams had a top 10 strength of schedule (Auburn was 13).

The Big12 ended last season with 5 teams in the top 25...not what I would call a one team DOMINATION.

I was not talking statistics...the last time I did that was while earning a degree but numbers of Wins and Loses and points on the board. You talk about one year compared to decades of top 25 ranking for SEC teams...come on are you for real? There is eventually transition through seniors to freshman with a turn around but the programs show they are consistant in their programs in the southeast...nuff said.

O, and to clarify going BLUE is for GSU...GO EAGLES! Btw, I dislike Auburn as much as Georgia...anyhow one of the best games this year to watch will be at the end of our regular season when we actually play Alabama...just wonder what they will be ranked at that time...hmm

So what did we learn from the first week of College Football.......

Notre Dame ------sucks
Auburn---really sucks
Oregon State-----well who is Sacramento State
Oregon ----- seems like they flopped in a big game, too many turnovers.
Boise St- you beat Georgia now play Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, LSU, Arkansas, Miss St and then see how you fair

For the most part the top teams did what they were suposed to do---kill smaller schools who were looking for a pay day so we actually didn't learn much.

IMO Alabama did not look good, running attack was weak but then again it was a first game and you really can't tell alot from that.

OU- killed Tulsa

LSU seemed to be the one who came out smelling like a rose. Defeated a top 5 team pretty convincingly.

Florida State ---- looked pretty good.......

TCU- really, really you let Baylor kick your tail and if the coaches hadn't played conservative it would have been worse.

So what does all this mean? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING and here is why......Preseason polls are a joke, they base everything on what you did last year with a little thought put into it. Look at Auburn last year...weren't ranked very high in the beginning and ended up winning it all.

It about 4 weeks then you can start to tell how teams are doing when they get into conference play. Some will have sooner tests like OU and Alabama but you really don't know until more games are played.

__________________________________________________ ____________

Conference realignment

OU will go to the PAC12/14/16 and even Texas may go.....Why? Because it is an easier conference than say the SEC.

Why you may ask is the SEC a stronger conference right now? Who knows but maybe because we have won the last 5 BCS N/C's but it is all relative and right now is the SEC's time. A few years ago USC was killing people, Michigan was really a game, ND always seemed good.

Each conference has dominate teams, OU-Texas-Nebraska, Alabama-Florida, Michigan-Penn State-Ohio State, Miami-Florida St, and the list goes on but it seems to me that it rotates every few years.

This aliognment talk is based solely on money. A&M didn't like Texas having their own deal, felt left out...SO they are taking their ball and going home, BUT if they do move then the Big 12 will not be long till it folds.

So then we will have a Pac 12/14/16, Sec, Big 10/12/14/16 and who else????? In my mind it will be the ACC, simply because the basketball is too strong so they can't dissolve. AND Then will will have a play off between the 4 big conferences 1 play 4, 2 plays 3 and the winners play each other. JMO

__________________________________________________ _______________

Now as far as the current strength of schools here are the contenders.

OU, LSU, Florida St, Alabama
May be a few dark horses like Florida, Arkansas or a Big 10 team

Ou plays Florida St so they cancel out each other. Alabama and LSU play so the same thing.

Remember the Last Sugar Bowl for the BCS N/C was played by LSU and they won. Defacto home game for them.

But as they always say " On any given Saturday" .............

I put my money on a team with a strong defense and less on a dynamic offense. We saw what happened to Texas when Colt got injured.

IMO if a team relies on simply a QB, they seemed to be doomed if they can not run the ball, because if the QB struggles then they have no where to go. A strong run game and a stout defense usually wins.........( See Oregon-Auburn)( Alabama- Texas) (Florida-OU) all high powered offenses and OK defenses and that is what worries me about Alabama........they have a pretty good defense but the running game seemed a little weak last week against Kent St. JMO Though

I concur with that assesment. The big conferences all killed the small ones.

Big 10 went 10-2
Big 12 went 10-0
SEC sent 10-2
Big East went 8-0
Pac 10 8-4
ACC 8-4

And you see the trend?

And some of the losses listed in those numbers are to the same conference. OR (like in Oregon-LSU) mixed games from one of the big 6 conferences. Point being that NONE of these conferences lose many out of conference games. And ALL of them have a few teams who will.

Maybe. But once you were to add TT, Texas, OU and Okie St. it would be a helluva conference.

I was talking to JeckelandHyde and mentioned that, while I like the Longhorn Network idea, and I think it's brilliant and I'm all for them having it, it may end up like an achor around their neck. Just like Notre Dames NBC contract. If I recall corectly, the Irish would have to either give up the contract or share it with a conference if it were to join one. And the bigger the conferences get, the worse it is for an independent to stay 'in the mix'. It'll be interesting to see how it shakes out.

But think how you Bama fans would feel if Auburn all of a sudden wasnt' an annual game anymore.

I'm still actually wondering how the hell the Big East gets an sutomatic BCS bid.

Oklahomas defensive secondary didnt' impress me at all. There are athletes at smaller schools that used to never be there. Caliber wise. But two big breakdowns in the Tulsa game (yes, I know OU beat them like they were supposed to ) led to their 14 points. Those weren't drives down the feild. But long passes in a secondary missed asignment and WFO receivers.

But we tend to nitpick our teams like we are coaches.

Except crazy whacky SEC guy. As long as their team is winning there is no problem.

But a real and objective fan can critique their team even when winning.
