Take the Extractor and make it. This will give you a feel on how the hood cutting should go. There are a few small "tabs/plastic pieces", that need to be removed from the Extractor for it to sit flush on the hood. I recommend using a full sized piece of cardboard and cut the hole like it would be cut in the hood. You will also notice that the back edge if the Extractor is about 1.5 inch long, I only cut my hood the .5 inch, so the Extractor sit over the metal on the hood 1 inch. Make the hole as tight/small as possible, because the metal on the hood is very thin. Measure twice and then measure again, use only Painters tape, a few layers. DO NOT USE MASKING TAPE! You can't get it off. I'm 6'2" and had no problems cutting the hood with it on the car. I also used the blanket and 2x4 to hold the hood up off the engine. The hood cuts like BUTTER, there is no need for huge power tools, a jig saw will do, Tin Snips help for trimming.

Thanks for the tips. I am confused on the 2*4 part though. Could you elaborate?

For extra clearance I took a 2X4 about 2ft long and placed it on top of where the hood latch is so the hood didn't close and it had a little bit more clearance. I don't think this is absolutely needed. I just did it so I so I threw it in there. Unless you use a really long saws all blade you would be fine.

Thanks Jerry! These Pics show the 2 inch X 1/8 aluminum strips that I put on each side of the Extractor. I found that the edges of the hood near the Extractor were VERY soft, I added these to stiffen and support the hood. Please remember I placed my Extractor as far back as I could, MINE IS NOT In The OEM location. The length of the aluminum strips will vary, mine are also "TUCKED" under the support metal. I also put a slight BOW in the strips before I added metal epoxy and slid them into place. Now if you press on the hood at the edge of the Extractor it is very firm. The strips come in 24 and 36 inch lengths, I needed 30 inches, your will differ. Everyone loves my car with this mod. Good luck with yours.

WOW guys congrats on such innovative thinking, that heat extractor is the BEES KNEES! Now I want to do that to mine too!!! Does anyone live in South Florida (Broward/Miami-area) that would be able to help me with this mod (I will compensate you for your time), or can you direct me to a shop in south Florida that could do this for me at a reasonable price? I have no cutting tools and wouldn't trust myself to do such a thing alone.
Thank you. Last edited by hcoll003; 08-25-2014 at 04:58 PM. |

Just did it to my 2011 2SS
Just added the extractor to my 2011 2SS SIM. Used the stock 2014 extractor and drip pan. Set it up so I can remove the drip pan if I want maximum extraction. Many thanks to Jerry for the extensive writeup. Was a bit nervous-making to take an air driven saw to the hood, but it came out great.

OK, what I need to know is if the studs that come with the grill, will screw out to allow for the new 1 3/4" in the center and the 2" up front to be put into play without any sort of re-working?
My body shop did my install and have seen this post but can't recall the studs on the grill, whether or not they just unscrew since they were really concerned with them at the time. They now want to bring my car back in to do this correctly so I can use the tray. Thanks!
