Was that for the dealer to change it or just buy the fluid at the dealer? If it was just to buy it, then I wouldn't be surprised. The mark up is rediculous. Same thing for the Dodge rear end lube. They get as high as $35 a quart for nothing more than a base line Group III synthetic. Mobil 1 75w-90 LS is far superior to the GM stuff and is a great gear lube. If you want the best, find a local retailer that sells Amsoil and get the Amsoil Severe Gear 75w-90. Check your hometown style auto parts stores and hardware stores to see if they are a Amsoil retail store. I will be changing the differential fluid in our Camaro with Amsoil Severe Gear 75w-90. Amsoil Severe Gear is second to none. Since our diffs only hold a squirt of pee for capacity, I would want the best.

GM engineering did alot of researching and testing before
they knew that Mobil 1 products was the best oils to use
in all GM vehicles.Having talked to a GM engineer before
he gave me his insight and said Mobil 1 was the best choice
for all GM vehicles I belive him over anyone on this forum.
Also yes I forgot to say definitley use the additive with
the Mobil 1 75W90 gear oil.
Give it up dood. Mobil 1 was the best choice for GM because they paid them the most money. Just like Valvoline putting the Cummins symbol on the bottles of Valvoline Premium Blue Diesel Oil. All it is, is a marketing game for each other.

I used the Mobil 1 and whatever slip additive they had at O'Reily's. Haven't had any issues.

How many differentials have you seen on here that failed because they wore out due to material wear (friction) or had seized bearings? I haven't seen one.

If your gears were destroyed (from almost anything), it damn sure wasn't because of what lube you had in it, unless you think oil film magically stops you from shearing tooth off a ring gear... jokes.

I changed my differential fluid today. I put Royal Purple 75-90 in using a pump. It should have been a 15 minute job but I think Magilla Gorilla tightened the top plug. I had the car up on ramps so I was unable to put a lot of heft to it. Finally I tied a rope onto the ratchet handle and pulled from the back of the car. Once I got past that, the job was cake. After I finished, I took it over to a near by shopping center and did eight figure eights.

It amazes me how much the dealers charge to do that job. No wonder they want you to wait in the waiting room instead of watching what little effort it takes!

I can get some valvoline gear oil for free...it says its for limited slips...I might go ahead and change it...I've been holding off for some amsoil or redline....but free fluid is tough to beat

I was shocked how much metal came out of my diff at 600 miles. GM fluid already has the additive so don't spend extra. At 2000 miles I drained off just enough to see what the oil looked like and NO metal. I use AMSOIL Severe Gear and a bottle of GM modifier. Other Camaros I see come through the shop still show metal on the plug so we recommend AMSOIL.

GM synthetic axle lube

I just bought the GM GL-5 synthetic gear lube part #88900401. I also bought the GM additive part 88900330 Price: $35.08 list $26.31 net price for the lube, additive price is $12.54 list price, $4.98 net. I read about a test of all the top gear lubricants and there is better products, but I heard no complaints with the GM diff lube.

I'll most likely be using Amsoil or whatever DSS reccomends for there HammerHead differential kit when I install it.

I broke A right axle an was thinking about buying the 1400hp axles (I think they come with the kit-DSS HammerHead), but I thought about it for a while. I'd rather replace a $182.00 (net price) GM axle an have that break then having gears ($800.00+) or a trans break (thousands), when I can change an axle in under an hour anyway without air tools if I'm in another state drag racing, if it breaks again at the track. Untill I strengthen the rest of the drivetrain.

When I did my rear diff fluid, it seems like the factory fluid is thinner than the Mobil 1 stuff. When I took the top bolt off, the fluid came out with a slight watery consistency. The Mobil1 gear oil was a lot thicker and would run a lot slower. Both are supposed to be 75W90 oil so why is that? It was a VERY noticeable difference in viscosity.

It costs me about $25 to change the diff oil. $12 for the Mobil1 LS 75w90, and $15 for the limited slip additive. I’ll probably be switching to Amsoil the next go around because it’s only 3 bucks more at my parts store. Come to think about it, I should have just picked up Amsoil instead of Mobil1 for the price difference.

The dealer wanted $35 for the GM oil….shessssh….

Changed mine this weekend. Oil was pretty bad after 9000 miles.

Great video! Thanks for making that!

Do you have one for manual tranny fluid change, too?
