Don't get me wrong I love the first generation Camaro. My dad had a 69 SS 350 when I was kid in Michigan, the muscle cars were always my favorites growing up. Back in the 80s the best things we had going were TPI Corvettes, IROC-Zs, Monte Carlos SSs and of course the Grand National. Until the last 15 or so years nothing could touch the muscle cars for performance and power. I'd venture to guess if my dad didn't have that 69 Camaro I wouldn't have a 2010 SS today. On a side note, my Nintendo collection lives on in my family room to this day. PS3? No, I'll take Mega Man 2, Metroid, Zelda, Contra, Castlevania 3 and Super Mario Bros 3 any day of the week even if I have to spend 3 hours blowing dust out of the cartridges to do it.

Love Super Tecmo Bowl....And yes I agree the 60's Muscle cars are awesome, but you are dead on with the stock HP ratings...Everything I have read and reviewed backs up your point. well done and nicely stated. That being said, some douchebag will get on this thread and start bashing V6 Camaro's and their owners as well as current SS Camaro's and their owners. It happens on all of these threads...Happy 4th

You can tell those engines were underrated because where the power number was pulled in the RPM range on the factory rating. Lets of course not forget that even underrated these engines were still rated at gross and not net. People have such fond memories of these old cars that they aren't even remember for what they really even were.
Now you are talking the language that everybody understands , even without Rosetastone

You are incorrect.

Most of the muscle car engines of the late 60's and early 70's were underrated for insurance. That's a fact.

The GS Stage 1 is a good example of that.

All this talk about which is faster doesn't really matter to me. The next car I'd love to have is a 1st gen convertible Camaro! Ooooyea!!!

OP...do you have a way to scan the pic you ran across and post it? Would love to see!

This officially licensed Camaro picture was originally a 1969 Camaro original advertisement in LIFE Magazine.

i am actually more impressed with a 1969 camaro than a 2010 camaro. because people are stilling comparing there HP rating to cars from the 60s+70s.

Best bench racing thread in ages, I had to join to respond! Yes I'm old...

I had a Camaro Whitebook in the 1980's, it may yet resurface. In 1971,2, or 3 GM had the ratings for their motors in both gross and brake hp, I recall the the z28 was 330 gross and 270 net. Too true also, hp was dropping like a stone from emissions, lower compression and 70's-itis in general. I rode in a new 1968 396/325, with 3-second Muncie linkage. It was way torqy but wouldn't really rev. I recall it was the station wagon motor, the 396/375 was another animal, maybe someone sharp knows if it was the same as the Vette 396/425.
We'll never know so talk on. Few with a pure stock old car will race it, and for 1/4 mi, consider the tires of the day. There was a recent video of a magazine test of a 1970 Charger Hemi, 14.5 in the 1/4. Doesn't sound that hot for the legendary Hemi, but the tires smoked more than halfway down the strip. 7.75/15's anyone?
