I have full confidence in the 6L80 and believe it is a step backwards to go to a 4L80.
I have one on the bench getting all the good stuff and 30 years Auto Trans experience going in. Ted.

It's my understanding that the 6L80 pulls each gears clutch out then engages the next gears clutch to switch gears while the 4L80 stacks each gears clutch allowing the car to stay in boost and shift quicker. I had a built (by ARD) 6L80 and now I have a built, full manual shift 4L80 and I can't imagine going back. The 4L80 shifts noticeably quicker and you also have on less shift in the quarter mile. The lockup torque converter that you can get with the 4L80 is also nice but I'm not sure that you cannot get one with the 6L80 (I just have never heard of one).

from my understanding the 4l80 is just a electronic th400, how can this be bad or a dwngrade..no disrespect, but just asking..., also bght a stage 4 jakes for around 5400 shipped, this has everything upgraded...so spend 3200 to upgrade the 6l80 , or sell you 6l80 for 2500 and then spend 1500 more..that leaves you with a bad a#s 4l80 for only 1500 out of pocket...imo

only downside , is there a bitch to hook, and hard shock factor on driveline .. imo , if you matched up 2 identical 650rwhp camaro,s.. 1a6 and 1 m6, the a6 will be more consistant and probably beat the m6 everytime..imo

It was stock. The trans had an attitude and wasn't shifting right or leaving hard. The 4/5/6 clutch pack was showing signs of wear but nothing every broke. The heat from the trans blanket this summer at the track when the air was 90+ couldn't have helped. Ted has decided to build it the way he wants so it won't be a stock 6L anymore. |

The biggest issue with the 6l80 is the retarded first gear. You can't run a proper converter or rear gear with it without blowing the tires off. It's just too short.
