I drive I81, I70 and I270 every day to and from work between PA and MD. I drive my 6300lb Silverado 4x4. (Camaro's not here yet, and this thing feels SAFE!) Every day I get tailgated by people in little cars, sometimes so close that their entire hood seems to disappear. I get cut off an onramps and offramps, and by people doing lane changes with no regard for safe following distance. I see idiots weaving in and out of traffic at high speed, narrowly avoiding collisions, a sea of brake lights in their wake. Traffic "accidents" are a daily occurrence. To these people, saving a few seconds on their trip can literally be worth someone's life. I saw ONE person get pulled over for weaving through slow traffic at very high speed on a motorcycle. The dummy blew by a cop, who hit the lights and drive up the shoulder to nail this clown. I wish reckless driving were as avidly enforced as speeding. I shouldn't have to risk my life to drive to work.

Scott,
I agree with everything you said except to add that do be careful when you call people out. In this day and age, road rage gets started quite offten by calling people out. You don't know if that person your calling out has a gun or not; just like that guy that gave you the finger. He apparently thinks he is right in every thing he does and doesn't care how it affects anyone else. I like to refer to these people as Intellectually Deficient In Operating Technology (I.D.I.O.T.) and you would think that states like Az who have a stupid motorist law would have passed a law requiring hands free phone usage by now! To all.... be careful out there! |

Great post... and I think the state I live in is probably the worst example of how bad drivers can be.
Just yesterday a lady was trying to merge onto the highway. I was in the right lane... speeding... about 5mph over. She was coming flying on the on ramp and actually passed me before she merged. She cuts infront of me, slams on the breaks, gives me the finger and screams at me. I don't even know what I did wrong?? Here people seem to operate by the 5-car rule when a light turns red. Once the light is red apparently it's still ok for 5 more cars to go through the intersection. I could go on but I'm sure everyone knows how stupid people drive. I used to love to drive. I would do 10,000 to 15,000 miles a year of driving just for fun. Lately though besides my commute, I won't drive unless it's a non-holiday weekend or an off-hour to avoid as many people as possible. Confronting someone here risks a violent confrontation. I try and drive like I want others to drive. Kind of the treat others like you'd like to be treated thing. |

I pity people who do things like that but I find it hard to feel sorry for them. They made their choice and drove like a fool for which a huge price was exacted. This is a free country and that means you are free to make stupid decisions. Sometimes they cost you big time.

This is a very sad story. It goes to show you that our driver training and licensing system is broken and needs repair. There's not enough education about the dangers of driving and people are taking the attitude that nothing can happen to them.
The two worst things we have going on right now are as follows: Firstly, People who use their cellphones while driving. This is a huge distraction and while people have an attitude that they are so great they can do both we all know studies have shown that using a cellphone reduces your driving ability to that of a drunken driver. Secondly, people are intentionally disobeying traffic signals in an attempt to increase their fuel economy. "Hypermilers" with fancy computerized economy indicators on their dashboards are rapidly discovering that stopping at stop signs and traffic lights is "ruining" their "bragging rights" when comparing mileage like some kind of perverted version of bench racing. People need to be educated that fuel efficiency is not an excuse to disobey the law. Police should also be enforcing traffic signals as much as or more than they enforce speed laws. More people get in accidents at intersections than do from speeding on the interstate, so naturally the focus should be catching stopsign violators over speeders. But for some reason even the law looks upon rolling through a stopsign as no big deal but speeding is the most irresponsible thing that can be done. The system needs fixing and the people need education. |

Sad to think people don't use common sense. When I was ten years old ( many years ago) I witnessed a 62 Thunderbird try and out run a freight train in Coronado Cal. I watched in horror to see a young woman driving and her passenger most likely her boyfriend. I bet the train was crusing at about 65 or more. And at this particular RXR crossing it had only lights no gates and I watched her speed up and then the impact it T-boned her and drug the auto probably about 500 feet if not more. I was the first at the scene and the Conductor had me hold his hat while he checked on them and he didnt want me to get to close. I thought forsure they died at the scene as it was a horrible sight as you can imagine. They actually lived from what I heard I think with cars being built with metal helped save their lives. I did hear they each lost limbs and had major trauma. I will never forget it as long as I live.
To current day the one thing I see alot in Utah is people always in a hurry and running red lights. I don't get it, I grew up in South Jersey and when I got my DL it was 1977 and was taught defensive driving which I still practice to this day. I know there is lots more cars and people on the road and you really have to keep your eyes open for the other person. Anyway take care and drive safe. |

I have first hand knowledge of events such as you mention, the only thing I can say is it's always a tragedy. No one knows why people do this is it a sense of invincibility or shear stupidity or lastly being totally oblivious of you situation or surroundings.

If you have kids and want them to take a real great defensive driving class.... send them or go yourself to a Motorcycle Safety class taught by and indorsed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation even if you don't plan on ever riding. The course teaches defensive riding which can be useful when driving cars and you can take the classroom part only if you want. The added benefit would be that anyone that takes the course would have their eyes opened to look out for motorcyclist! Just a thought.......

I'm in total agreement with Fbodfather. I think drivers today are too preoccupied with all the other things going on in life. But not only have many drivers become lax, so has law enforcement. People run red lights, stop signs, tailgate, etc., because they know they will probably get away with it. It seem as though you hardly ever see a cruiser actually patroling any given area, especially on the expressways. Traffic cops have become fund raisers and tax collectors sitting in a nice shaded area along the highway waiting for the next speeder (contributor) to come along. And Michigan wants to layoff 100 state troopers. We need more, not less and they should actually do their job which is protect and serve the public. And yes, sometimes we need protection even from ourselves.
