Carmax impresses with their trade-in offer!
I know this is a little off topic...I own a Camaro but have a Grand Prix as a winter car because I live in the Chicago area. Well I found out this week I am moving to Jacksonville, FL March 1st. So of course I decide right away I'm selling the Grand Prix, as its one less thing to move and it has been nothing but problems anyway; seriously...I hate the car with a passion.
Decided to hit up Carmax just for the hell of it because I'm always seeing the commercials about how they'll make you an offer on a car whether on not you buy one of theirs. Figured their offer would probably be an insult, but on the 1% chance it was fairly reasonable it would save the hassle of selling it myself. Well low and behold, they offered my $8,500 for it! (2006 Grand Prix GT with 46k miles) That's probably what I would have started it off at selling privately, and odds are someone would have talked me down at least a few hundred or a G to get the deal done. So I saved the hassle AND got more than I would have privately! So just wanted to share my experience and say wow, I am pretty impressed! Of course I'm sure plenty of people have had just to opposite experience w Carmax. But worth a shot if anyone is looking to get rid of a used car! If I decide to trade in my SS when the 'vert comes out I'll be sure to stop in at Carmax first. Wish it was out already! I can't see what sort of testing would hold it up till q3 2011. |

Glad things worked out for you. I actually got a decent offer from Carmax as well. I probably could have gotten $500 to $1000 more from a private buy, but the guys that I got wanted me to drive 40 miles away to show them the car, and then pay with cashiers checks... Carmax saved me a lot of time... Time is money!

Carmax has done us great on two cars we sold and one that our middle son bought; they are a very reputable and fair business that I have referred a few people to based on our experience. Glad you had a good experience too.

yeah I think Carmax usually gives a better trade-in deal then a dealer...

BTW, if you car has a clear title, then there is usually no problem, unless if you don't have the a two part title.... they don't cut a check till they have it in hand, more than a week later. If the car isn't paid off it can take up to 3 weeks for Carmax to pay. Not bashing Carmax, just letting the general public know the facts....

I sold my 2002 Monte Carlo SS to Carmax when I ordered my Camaro. They were great, their offer was fair and I didn't have to be hassled by trying to sell it myself. I <3 CARMAX!!!
