I buzzed mine off with an impact, to install it however is going to be another issue for you since you shouldnt install it with an impact because it needs to be torqued down.
When I installed mine I put it in gear and pulled the e-brake and had a buddy stand on the brakes while I tightened it down. But mines a manual, otherwise your going to have to get the tool that locks the flywheel in place. And that involves removing the starter, which really isnt a big deal.

i just did mine and i have a manual transmission. I pulled the starter and found a hole in the flywheel they drilled for balancing the flywheel. just so happens my air chisel bit fit perfect and snug in the hole. I turned the flywheel and made sure I had a firm resting spot on the bell housing. Or if you have a trusted friend to hold a adequate flat tip screw driver will work also. also I've seen others use vise grips in such a way, so that the lower part of the v of the jaws captures a tooth and clamped in place. This only works if you can capture a tooth, because the jaws them self will not hold it. I have headers so this wasn't an option. not enough room. or you can buy the tool. but the parts stores don't carry them from my experience. dealer item or kent moore I assume. I did see another manufacture selling them too.

I would hold the flywheel even though you have a auto trans. I wouldn't put that much stress on the drivetrain and trans. and weather you use a impact to take it off or not you still need to hold the flywheel for going back on. the 50 nm torgue plus the 120 degrees I think it was is a lot....you will find out. your going to need a long breaker bar plus a pipe or cheater bar on that for degrees. it's a bitch to tighten. Just make sure have a good hold on the flywheel how ever you do it.

I went out and bought a new 750ft/lb impact and that wouldn't budge mine... I ended up getting a large chain and chaining the harmonic ballancer pulley to the frame. turned the crank with a breaker bar until the chain was snug then used a 4ft breaker bar to get it off.
This was the worst part of my install. took me about a day to get that bolt off, then the rest was a piece of cake... good luck

Impact Gun is the way to go to remove the bolt, but please DON'T use a impact gun to reinstall it.....not the correct way to do it!!!
Use a flywheel locking tool, or otherwise prevent the flywheel from spinning as some others above me suggested! Good Luck! |

I put a propane torch to mine to heat it as it would not budge. Once hot I used an impact and it came right off.

THIS!!!
You can buy them used on Ebay and sell it back when you are done if money is a problem. This tool is a huge help when swapping a cam or installing a supercharger. I decided to keep mine. You need it several times during the tear down and supercharger install. This is the GM specified tool for the job. I also bought the Kent Moore installer tool used which is pretty sweet. The balancer puller was a free rental from Autozone. They also free loan the 200# click type torque wrench that you will need. No torque angle meter but still a good option. -Mark. |

Use a strap wrench or a chain and bolt to hold the balancer in place. I changed my timing belt on my 4Runner and the bolt had to be torqued stupid like 300 ft lbs. I had to borrow a strap wrench to hold it in place. Easiest thing to do is what others mentioned and find a way to hold the flywheel or use an impact.
