Need vin help where can i go to decode a 69 vin

A customer of mine bought a 1969 and beleaves that it is a 302 cid z28 car can anyone help?

there isn't anything in the VIN that denotes a z28. there may be some marking on the trim tag ("X" code .... i'd have to look it up in a book). but not all z28's would be marked. unfortunately, there are more clones on the roads these day .... more "1969 z28's" on the road than were produced in 1969, so it's really important to do all of the checking prior to paying any cash!!!

all 1969 z28's came with front disc brakes, manual trans, 302 DZ code motor ("DZ" stamped on the block, passenger side front of motor behind alt) and no A/C. no z28 convertibles were produced. there may be a build sheet behind/under the rear seat and/or between the trunk floor and the gas tank.

let us know what you find out .... it will be interesting to know if it's real or not. you might consider looking for info on camaros.net .... it's a forum focused on the early camaros.

Go to Nasty Z28.com. You will probably find someone who can help you decode the VIN there for you.

Was power steerig an option on 69 Z28's? I remember power assist brakes and manual steering.

yes ..... you could get a '69 z28 with power steering.

orangetwk - there were approx. 20,300 camaros equipped with the RPO code z28 produced in 1969. the VIN itself is pretty straightforward. For a Camaro, it should be:

example: 124379N111111

where 12 indicates chevrolet camaro, the even number 3rd digit indicates a V8 (odd number indicates inline 6), 37 indicates a coupe, the 9 indicates production year, the N indicates the plant where the car was produced (N- Norwood OH, or L for Van Nuys, CA), and the final six digits are the sequential production number.

the VIN will not decode the Z/28 part but it can tell you some things.

124379NXXXXXX = "1" is for Chevrolet, "2" is for Camaro series, "4" is for V8, "37" is for coupe, "9" is for 1969, "N" would be for Norwood OH plant but you might find "L" for Los Angeles CA. The X's are going to be numbers that identify the car in sequence for that production plant. The numbers start with 500001 for the first car built at that plant and go up from there.

Figuring out if a car is an original Z/28 takes a lot of looking and even then, without the original "born with" engine, it will be very difficult to say for certain that it is an original Z/28.

There are various other things it needs to have, so you look for those things. You can usually find other clues that will rule it out from being a real Z/28 pretty easily when you know what to look for. Bottom line - most fakes can be identified but being absolutely positive on a real one is a challenge without strong documentation.

The only options you could not get on a 1st generation Z were automatic transmission and air conditioning.

nor the convertible option.

also, there were SS/RS's and Z28/RS's .... but you couldn't combine the SS and Z28 packages.

otherwise, it was an open field.
