Walgreens Employees thread

Anyone else out there work for Walgreens?

Im a MGT (assistant manager) and there are tons of rumors saying that Walgreens is going to be making big changes to store management.

This company keeps posting BILLION dollar profits year after year and yet they are acting as though they are losing money and need to make severe cuts.

I dont think my $36,000 a year last year was too much at all. I feel for the job that i do that im paid just about right.

And yet they feel they need to change things. Word is that we will be finding out specifics of any changes in Feb or March.

I'm not a Wal-Greens employee but I am a District Loss Prevention Manager for another company. I'd always advise someone in retail to watch their back, these companies have no loyalty to anyone in the face of profits...nor should they if its the correct business move. Always keep your eyes open for a better deal, sounds like it might be time to start looking at the job boards if "big changes" are coming. At Sears they announced three years ahead of time that they were going to close unprofitable stores and sell the properties 3 years ago and now its become a reality. Just my two cents.

Walgreens is no where close to closing stores and as I said they are posting 10 billion dollar profits or more every single year. That is what makes me HOPE that these upcoming changes are more directed at salary managers above me who get huge bonuses.

I do not get a bonus and I work hourly, 40 hours a week. The manager above me is salary with a bonus and then there is the store manager who makes even more salary with a great bonus.

The one thing the company has said is that "yes we are going to be making changes and they will take 2-3 years to implement"

Usually that means change via attrition if you know the history of walgreens.

I guess im just upset that a company in such a good financial position is going to use the economy as an excuse to screw its hard working managers.

Exactly the reason I said to watch your back. This isn't like the old days where you could work for a retailer....much less any company for your entire life. Retailers make cuts like this all the time, even when times are good. In my own career I was lucky to dodge two layoffs because "changes" were being made. Never hurts to keep your eyes peeled for something better.

What your saying is totally true, but the problem is that I really enjoy this job. I worked as a restaurant manager for 6 years for various restaurants and it SUCKED. 50hrs per week for less money than i make now.

Not only that, but I was in a major car accident in march 2010. My Mustang was put into a pole and my leg was shattered above the ankle and had to be rebuilt with plates, screws, all that.

I am JUST NOW getting to the point where being on my feet for 8 hours a day is managable. I stilll walk with a slight limp and when I go home and sit down my leg often cramps up and I have to use a cane to walk while at home. Its a daily routing of waking up with a fully funtional leg, going to work, coming home and having my leg go to crap.

Another retailer could look at this on any application and think I would be a physical liability even though while im at work I can do just about any physical job that a perfectly healthy person can do.

The main rumor is that my title "MGT' will be "eliminated" and a new position called co-manager or something else will be created and we managers will be allowed to interview for this new position. The big question of course is how much will this new position be paid?

Maybe it wont be too different from what I make now and maybe it will suck big time. They are doing it this way so that people cannot claim partial unemployment.

Ever heard of Fred's?

They are a big retailer here in the south and south east and also post up billions in profits every year. I use to work for them as part of management and a few years ago they sent out something similar. Come to find out they eliminated the assistant manager position as everything they did was already done by a couple other positions and they also eliminated the bonuses they gave out to managers.

The retailer I'm with now also did the same thing recently. They reduced the max pay of all management positions so anyone making over that took a pay cut, reduced the bonuses of Store Mangers and up, and eliminated the bonuses of all other employees.

From my personal experience, anytime a company says they are going to make changes to management it is never good. Not to be a pessimist but I only see three possible outcomes or a combination of them, 1) a cut in pay across the board, 2) reduction in bonuses, or 3) the elimination of one of the positions

I agree.

The major rumor is that my position (MGT) and the position above me (executive assistant) are being eliminated but the people are not being let go, they are being allowed to interview for two new management positions.

Executive assistants can make well over 50k with their bonus however I do the bascially the same work and I only made 36k last year in my 4th year.

Im thinking their main "target" is to eliminate the bonus and higher salary of the position above me and give those people somewhere around a 40k salary instead of well over 50.

Again, I feel 36k is well justified for what i do every day. we are working managers, we do truck, build displays, clean, even run registers. We do not sit int he office all day and do paper work.

So im just hoping the company realizes that and keeps me somewhere around the same wage i make now.

I can totally understand cutting back executive assistant and store manager pay, but not mine, at least not by much.

REALLY!! IN A CAMARO FORUM!!! Are you out of your mind? Have you not read the GM emplyee story?

Two things:

1) Most of us dont care about Walgreens, Walmart, or even walnuts. It's a CAR board!
2) You are crazy if you think spreading rumors and/or talking about a company you work for wont cause you reprocussions. You really should be more careful and keep this kind of talk one on one without written documentation.

Same goes to those answering/bashing. Don't ever think you are anonymous on these boards.

Just sign me a Network/Security Specialist with 20+ years of corporate network experience; and yes, I have had to investigate stupid online posts. It's really easy to identify people.

Ok first of all, i dont care that this is a camaro web site. This section is for off top discussion, which this qualifies for.

Another thing, I have no said one thing that bashes my company. I am simply discussing the goings on, I even said i like my job.

Third, you compared me to the GM guy who lost his job. Do you see me showing pictures or anything else that is sensitive to walgreens? Nope.

Go troll elsewhere.

I have said nothing wrong or anything to bash walgreens what so ever.

Wow that sucks to hear. Ironically had a severe injury in 2010 in my left arm when a 05 Mustang hit me at 30 MPH when I was out running. I had compound fracture and it looked like I might only recover about 70% use of my arm. Trust me you really do need both arms to do this job when shoplifters want to fight you. That sucks to hear that you are in that position along with the injury. I guess all I can say is that I hope it works out for you...I know what the prospects are like with a bad injury.

Im headed to bed, thats for the discussion.
