a buddy of mine who used to work at Beale AFB had this to say

While I was there from '84-'92 they used an El Camino. Not sure of the engine in it but it was pretty fast.

The "spotter vehicle" stages at the end of the runway and waits for the U2 to fly by on final approach to land. U2's are essentially gliders with a small jet engine and can fly remarkably slow. But for landing, I think they fly at ~ 90MPH ground speed. As soon as the plane passes by, the spotter launches the car and accelerates to match the U2's speed. This is done within roughly 10 seconds. The spotter then, behind the U2, watches the wheel and radios the height in feet to the pilot. Typical radio chatter will be like, "Your'e at 15...12...10...8...7...7...6...4...3...2...1...tou chdown."

Yea...those spotter vehicles take a beating since it's like they are running the 1/4 mile all day long

Only tag would Pull a plane over and ask to see a license and registraition. then write them a ticket for having no tail lights
