Need help understanding the staggered tire setup, and new tire options

I have a 2010 2LT RS with everything stock, so it has the 19" rims. I bought it used a few months ago, but I believe it was manufactured in summer of 2009. One my rear tires is pretty bald in the center tread, and the fronts are pretty worn, so I'm probably just going to be getting a new set of tires.

I'm not very familiar with staggered wheels, or sizing in general. I know the tires are slightly different sizes (245/45 on front, 275/40 on back). I know my wheels are all 19s, but I'm assuming this means the back and front wheels are different widths? I saw the tire sizing thread, and I'm assuming this relates to any non-OEM wheels as well. I'm assuming I won't be able to switch to having the same size tires all the way around unless I get new wheels, but will have to stay at 245/275?

Also, can anyone explain (or point me to a thread) the advantage of having staggered wheels?

contemptor, either you are a little confused or mistaken......heres why I say this. You said that you bought the car USED, IF you have a RS, and has a STAGGERED wheel/tire set up they are 20's, not 19's. the 20's have 8's on the front, adn 9's on the rear. The stock 19's are 8's all the way around and are not a staggered set up.

SO we will assume you do have 20's, and a staggered set up with 245/275. There is a lot of debate why GM did that.....but in a lot "sports cars" its set up this way and gives the car a bit of understear, which is a bit more forgiving in road course situations. HOWEVER, you CAN put another set of REAR wheels (20 x 9's) on the front and run the same size wheels/tires on all four corners such that you are able to rotate the tires front to back to erven out the wear over time. There has been quite a few of us that have done this and have actually reported that their cars actually handle better with that set up. I personally running this set up and I love it.

OH AND BTW......Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to Camaro5. There is a BIG fridge on the back porch with anything you can think of in it...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. Make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom's, wive's, husbands and boyfriends here don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!!
