Brake Fluid Around Cap on Reservoir

A while back there was a thread here about some ZL1 owners having a problem with finding brake fluid on the reservoir around the cap. I had checked mine, and there WAS some fluid on the reservoir. I wiped it off and forgot about it. Today I thought I'd check it again, and lo and behold, there's brake fluid there again. I called the service manager of the dealership where I bought the car to see if any services bulletins had been issued regarding this. He checked and said he could not find any.

I haven't seen anything on here for a while. So I'm wandering--Has anyone else noticed this lately? And are there any fixes for it?

Here's the thread to which I think you are referring --

http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...der+cap+recall

My ZL1 Convertible has a small amount of brake fluid on the master cylinder also.

I think there was a TSB on the master cylinder cap a couple of years ago, but from what I can find I don't think that the issue has been satisfactorily resolved. I think someone posted a DIY "fix" using a cutout from a plastic milk carton to help reinforce the rubber seal of the cap.

Have they tried replacing the cap?

There is a bulletin for '10 and '11s to replace the cap. Maybe they just didn't add the newer years yet to the bulletin. 09-05-22-005B

I apologize for the inconvenience you may be experiencing. I can set up a case with GM customer service if you would like. I just need your first and last name, address, phone number, VIN, mileage, and involved dealership name.

I look forward to your correspondence via PM.

Brandon sorry but that doesn't work. My dad and I have both wasted our time with the dealer and finally fixed it ourselves since gm couldnt been a long time gm guy and after this car it's time to consider another brand

I noticed fluid on mine as well. I just haven't gotten around to taking it to the dealership.

Checked mine this morning and is bone dry. I have only had it for 2 1/2 months though. It's just about time to put her to bed for the winter.

Aside from replacing the cap, can the problem be further mitigated by doing the
Clutch Fluid Reservoir mod?

Its common (since 2010 models). I had the same problem and went thru two new caps that supposedly fixed the problem but the seeping always returned. There seem to be two solutions:

1) Only fill fluid to the min line in the reservoir. I did this for a while and it worked for me (but you need to keep an eye on the level).

2) Another C5 member came up with the milk carton fix. I did this and no leaks for over a year will the reservoir filled to the max line. See post #15:

I went to the dealer today, and they gave me a new cap to try that they had ordered for me. It looks the exact same as the original (Made in Korea!). I know some posts say it didn't work for them, and others said it did. But no harm in trying it. If it doesn't seem to help, I'll do the 'milk carton gasket' upgrade. Thing is, I'm in Wisconsin, and don't foresee too many more days of driving before my car goes into hibernation. So it will probably be next year before I get a good assessment of whether the problem is fixed.

Not in my case. Still leaked. Keeping it JUST to the MIN line helped some.
