Painting the black plastic on a 2014 ZL1
Hi, I am new to this forum as I just got my 2014 SIM ZL1. Only 40 miles so far as I am waiting to have Xpel applied and they didn't have some of the right size pieces in stock.
Already tinted the windows and put new tires and wheels on. 295/315 Michelins and Lexani one piece forged 20x10 and 20x11's in all carbon fiber. Pictures to come later. I have a list of mods to do after the clear bra gets done, but here's where I could use some help. I don't mind the tail lights but the huge rear black plastic diffuser or whatever it's call has to have something done to it. I took the car to a car wrapper to see if we could cover it in 3M carbon fiber. It wouldn't stick to the plastic. He said it would have to be painted first. So I thought of painting the back piece and the side skirts, then cover all of them in carbon fiber. Then I thought about color matching the front spoiler as well. The problem I have is I have not seen a single ZL1 on this forum done this way. The front spoiler would probably cost $1000 to cover in Xpel as they would have to custom cut all the pieces. I doubt the plotter has the front spoiler available. I just think there is way too much plastic on a car that cost this much! Any thoughts? |

Personally I like the contrast of the "ZL1 parts" especially on cars that it pops against, like Summit White, the Yellows, the Reds and of course SIM. Mine is black so I kind of lost that pop, that's okay.
However, I hear you on the diffuser on the 14's. To each his own, so you have to do what will make you happy. You could try driving it for a couple of months before you make a decision and see how you feel then. But there was a dealership somewhere that, probably sanded, but definitely painted all of the plastic to match the body color of a car they were selling. It was a black car though, so it just made the plastic shiny and match the body but it was still black. So it's doable and in SIM would be unique. Good luck.

I have also thought on the idea of painting the ground effects pieces.
I generally don't like them in body color, although thespymaster's looks good to me, probably because the lower stripe sets the lower pieces apart. Consider that the Z/28 has the pieces painted gloss black, so that is an option with a reference. You could also apply hydrographics in a carbon (or other) pattern. I am also considering something like a medium or dark metallic grey paint. |

More rock chips! That's all I can imagine if you were to paint those pieces so close to the road, ha.

Not a fan of this. If you are sure then look for some good examples and then decide.

I've been thinking about getting mine painted also. The ground effects on my old SS and rear diffuser look much better IMO. The biggest drawback is scrapping my front splitter. I don't like the look of the contrasting plastic on my Black Z.

I personally love the look and will most likely paint as well. The z/28 has they aero pieces painted as well.
