Trade Camaro V6 for G8 GT (G8 owners step in)
Initially, I wanted a G8 GT but they were snatched up as soon as I went to a dealership. I test drove a G8 GT and I was very disappointed. Drove like a sluggish dog. They Sonata they had me test drive afterwards was waaay more fun and responsive.
So I got the Camaro V6. Problem is more back seat room is needed as the kid is growing very, very fast. So I'm looking at getting a 2009 G8 GT again and mod it as it has enough backseat room is huge. G8 Owners: 1) Was MPG really bad? 15/24 is kinda frightening. 2) Performance ok for you? Did you use premium to get rid of KR? I guessed this is why the G8 was sluggish. 3) Were you bored with it? What mods you did that helped that out? I know there is a G8 forum but I prefer to hear from G8 owners here to get more unbiased opinions. |

My buddy has a g8 and installed k&n intake magna-flow exhaust, kooks headers, ported throttle body. Very responsive set up, and he get around 25-26 mpg highway, and wound 19 city if he keeps off the throttle.

Well I have a few friends who were G8 GT owners and they loved them and modded them up pretty well with Bolt-on's, Headers and and intake do wonders but its really the tune for the tranny that wakes these cars up from what they were telling me.

Hmm... I dunno if you drove a GT then. They usually run low 13s out of the box and respond well to a tune and easy bolt ons. My GT with the 6.0L and the AFM still installed could get close to 30 mpg highway. It now has a cammed 6.2 motor out of a GXP with milled and ported heads and all the other bolt-ons. I get about 27 mpg highway. City is about 15-16.
Note, the G8 only weighs 50-100lbs more than a V8 Camaro. Check out the G8 board, there is people usually trying to sell a car or two on there. |

It was definitely a V8 GT as I saw the engine. It sounds like it was just run down a bit or maybe a vacuum leak somewhere or something. This does make me feel a bit better on the mpg. I average 19-21 mpg. All city gives me 16 and highway gives 25. So I'm not losing a lot. I've checked out G8 board. Wasn't clean to navigate like other car forums. I'll check out the for sale section as well. May save me some $$$ on mods. |

x2 on the tranny tune. A Cortex tuner will make a night and day difference on the tranny. I do mostly city driving, and I'm usually stuck in the 16 mpg range. I have seen up to 26 mpg when cruising at 60 mph down the highway. I wouldn't buy it for the gas mileage, but it's a pretty decent car nonetheless.

Why not just get a new charger? It's lightyears ahead of the G8

I love my G8, its a blast to drive and I still get compliments on a 4 year old car. I have a Rotofab intake, Solo catback, Kooks mids, and a custom tune. These mods alone did more than wake the car up, they gave it a good kick in the rear. I currently get 15+ mpg city driving and that's with a very heavy right foot and AFM turned off. I don't do a lot of highway driving so can't help you with the mpg's there. The only other mod I have planned in the near future is an LS9 cam swap along with all the necessary parts to fully eliminate the DOD lifters.

Get the GT and see if SLP still offers the Firehawk conversion...though I kind of doubt it this far out of production.
