How high of boost on turbo?

I am looking at a single turbo set up for my car. I was talking to Vince at Trifecta about tuning and one of the potential limitations he mentioned was blowby at higher boost levels. Has anyone on this forum run above 6psi? He mentioned that someone tried around 8psi or so but they noticed some blow by. I am guessing this is due to the rings but I also know that there is always a little bit of blow by with a turbo set up.

I am just trying to figure out solutions. I am sure that some day, people will lower the compression ratio with custom pistons and go with better rings but I am wondering how far you can push the stock set up.

At this time, fuel also is a limit but may be figured out in the future as well. Vince seems to think that the fuel system may be able to support 8-10psi but I am not sure if the rings will handle this. He also mentioned that poor crank case ventillation could be partially responsible as well. Thoughts??? Anyone try running higher boost?

Maybe with a catch can and better ventillation? If you could run 9-10psi, That would probably be good for 475whp or so.

The guy in Hawaii dynode at 350 rwhp. No access to drag strip on Oahu. Several others have dyno'd as well, including STS who builds the kit. Also several have run boost higher than 6 psi.

Best way to find out how high is boost until you blow up. If you are waiting for someone else to confirm, might be a while.

And yes, higher boost was causing excessive blowby issues on STS's kit but it more a design problem then the motor itself.

CRChevy- who specifically dynod a turbo'd v6 same as stock?

I think he's confused with the test car STS was using that was at the first c5fest. That ran 15 second 1/4 mile.

I saw something about that. They must have had some serious problems. It would be nice to see a run from a current kit. It sounds as if they thought they had things sorted out and didn't. The power output they are claiming on the dyno seems realistic for this engine.

I know that the Lexus/Toyota 3.5 V6 that is a similar type of engine/ 4 cam etc, but that is NOT direct injected, makes similar power NA (on a very generous dyno made 295whp with headers and cold air intake, and with a blower at only 3.5 psi, they showed an increase of 65whp) From what I have read, the direct injection is actually an advantage even with forced induction (unless you get to a point that you run out of fuel and who knows where the limit is? Vince thinks around 450-475whp? currently is a guess but the cobalt guys are working on this and their testing will carry over) It sure seems to me that 425-450whp should be attainable on stock compression as long as the rings hold up. They also verified the power increase with quarter mile times that were in line with the power.

350rwhp at 5psi and 34 mpg on the highway and the look of an SS driver when you pass them, priceless.

You need to realize this was with a car running a low boost. 350 RWHP is not nearly the max potential of a good running turboed Camaro V6.

For most of us, we couldn't get an SS with the same options for less than 6-7K.

And to go beyond 350 HP you don't pay anything more. To get more power out of the SS you fill have to fork over more $$$. Seemed like a good way to go to me.

I ran 10psi momentarily and engine is fine. Also ran 8psi for a day with no meth with speeds that could reach high 11's (ran about 7.5 sec 1/8th) in quarter mile and engine is still fine. Not sure about long term use though.

Thanks, that is good to know. Did you just run the 1/8th or full quarter mile? What was your trap speed on 8psi?

I will be back in action soon with the STS Kit on my car when the weather breaks here in Michigan and the strip opens back up.
I will be trying boost at 5.0 and 7.5. We should have the tune corrected now. When I have all the information complete and have a video I will post.

It was a little less than 1/8th and not on a track. I have a video posted in my thread of the road used that I got the times on. In the video I hit 85mph but with a rolling start at 8psi.
