This isn't chicken soup, it's car parts. They require precise fitting and measurements. Significant engineering and testing.

And there is no such thing as a cheap turbo setup.

Please share with us these "awesome results" you have seen.

I smell a troll thread.
I've been out of pocket for a while.....you obviously haven't been around cars very long...this is a common practice. I obviously wasn't referring to building a turbo...really dude??

I would agree with an earlier post that I probably paid 1/2 to even less than what a pre made kit would cost to purchase, be installed and tuned.

The things you have to consider are...

*the downtime( because we did all the bending, welding, and designing it takes a lot longer)

*Parts
*Labor (which is where most of the cost really comes from)

Things you pay for are convinience for just being able to bolt on with minimal downtime and all the time it took fabricate the kit in the first place. I can tell you that even with a basic design it can take weeks sometimes month to bring it all together to make sure its perfect. So that's where its up to you. I had another mode of transportation so I was able and willing to not drive my car during the frabrication stage. It was hard but saved me a ton of money.

Just my 2cents. I enjoy being involved with the complete building process.

Sorry man, I was out of pocket for a while and didn't respond.... This is exactly what I'm looking for! I had a buddy that used to buy diesel turbos and modify the waste gate, and throw them on all kinds of cars. Your threads are very helpful!

Thanks man I appreciate that.

I actually know a buddy that did just that on his prelude. Diesel Turbo with the modified wastegate..amazing results on his setup.

But it can be done and you will be good. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Put a turbo on my friends car for under $400 found a Volvo turbo at the junkyard and searched everywhere for all the pieces needed and even had to weld some stuff. Been running for almost 2 years now and no problems

so for ever one who thinks you need to spend a tons of money your wrong you just have to be patient, learn how to weld, and do your research!!!

Right, buying a turbo itself (cant make that at home) then running everything else yourself. The tubing and "plug n play-ish" aspect of a turbo kit really drives the price up.

If you can weld, you can save a good chunk of change.

Saving money is great, but the real advantage of a custom build is making choices for you. Junkyard turbos can work great, but it's a bit of luck.
If you want a killer set-up, learn how to read and plot compressor maps.
There are some companies that don't have the resources to do the maps, so those should be chosen partly based on a similar combo that works.
Be realistic about your power goals, and above all, drive agood factory turbo car like a GTR or a 911TT so you have a reference of what it feels like when it's done right.
Then, if you are not a trained welder, use factory manifolds of some sort, that way any mistakes will not adversely affect the turbo.

These posts are cracking me up. The guy wants to buy an eBay turbo, an intercooler, blow off valve, and fab the rest at home. Some of these comments from negative Nancy's make me laugh. This guy isn't going to make his own camshaft in his garage.

I thought hot-rodding and car performance modifications were born in the US. If the guy pulls a turbo, fabs up a system and gets it working then fair play to him. Shame modern stuff is riddled with kompewtahcrap that just frustrates the home tuner guys. Good luck to the guy I say.
