My Savini SV21c wheels!

My new Savini SV21cs are being worked on as we speak! 22X11s (315/25/22) in the rear and 22X9s (265/30/22) in the front.

Thanks so much to Nick at BFXauto for keeping me informed throughout the process. Here are some initial pics.

Cool pics. Sharing these might help explain the differences between cheap Chinese cast junk vs an actual forged/machined wheel. Here is an illustration of the other method of making wheels:

Forgive my lack of knowledge here but what would be the step required to make the original round blanks used in the CNC machine? Wouldn't that be the same idea of pouring hot liquid metal into a form?

My understanding of the forging process is that the round "blank" is poured into a mold, but while it's still molten to a degree they forge it by some type of impact, like dropping it onto an anvil or something. It's not too different from the old blacksmith hammering a glowing horseshoe--the hammering condenses the metal molecules, putting them closer together and molecularly aligning them in a manner that makes the resulting piece much stronger than just a cast piece.

Not that I'm a metallurgist or anything, so maybe I'm completely up in the night.

Forged blanks start out as super heated chunks of cast aluminum, and are slammed by a huge press that pushes about 6,000 tons. This aligns the grain of the material, and improves the properties of aluminum. It increases the tensile strength, and also reduces the brittle nature of cast aluminum. Cast wheels are terrible at surviving impacts, they crack and shatter. Forged wheels typically just bend, they hold together better. Forged material is also stronger than cast aluminum, so it requires less spoke material to support the same load. This is what makes forged wheels lighter than cast wheels.
