Look at the prices above. Just order the part and install it yourself. Should be good to go.

I would just wait until the TSB comes out. they only have a small amount in stock right now and need to build some stock up before releasing the TSB, if everyone orders it now, the TSB will be delayed even further.

Exclamation NEWS FLASH! (or flash news)

I have a 2010 2SS (Nov 2010 build date), and I’ve been using a SanDisk 8GB cruzer as my music library. I was experiencing most of the USB issues documented in this thread, so I called my dealer and ordered the new PDIM (PN 20985421), which is a 2011 part by the way. Once I knew they had the part, I took SDCamaro10’s post (the TIS2WEB update) to my dealer and asked if they could install it and flash the radio under warranty. The service manager said “no problem,” and they were going to do it while I waited. Unfortunately, when they tried to enter the warranty ticket into the GM database, it got kicked back. The service manager picked up the phone and called the GM rep, who said they wouldn’t cover replacing a 2010 PDIM with a 2011 PDIM. I don’t know why this should matter, but I was there listening to the conversation, and that’s exactly what the GM rep said.

Well, the service manager was almost as incredulous as I was and offered to do the job at cost. Instead, I purchased the part at cost (about $110) to install myself, and he offered to flash the radio for free. I had torn the console apart once before to install the switch and wiring harness for my exhaust cutouts, so the installation only took me about 30 minutes. jtzako posted an excellent DIY thread with photos, and I’ve linked it below.

After replacing the PDIM, I was on my way back to the dealer for the calibration update, and I tried using the USB port just to see what would happen with the old software still in the radio. Much to my surprise, it worked…and it worked like it’s supposed to work! When I held the menu button in to check the HW/SW codes, I was pleasantly surprised once again. My old codes (CC/CE) were gone, and I was reading “DB/DB.” I thought the software for the PDIM lived in the head unit, but it’s obviously internal to the module.

Here’s the bottom line: If you can lay your hands on PN 20985421, you don’t need the recalibration referenced on the TIS2WEB update. It’s plug and play. Just replace the old PDIM with the new one, and you’re good to go. Not only does the USB port work consistently now, it will stay in “RDM” mode after you remove power. It still indexes on subsequent startups, but only long enough to verify that you haven’t changed your library (several seconds). If you change your library, it will go through a complete index the first time only. Just install the new PDIM, and I’m pretty sure all your issues will go away.

INSTALLATION LINK: http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77662

Here’s a side note on the installation: You don’t have to completely remove the console to access the module. Once you have the upper portion of the console free to slide aft of the shifter base (step 9), you can lift it from the rear far enough to access the module, which is clipped into the subconsole (just forward of the cavity for the storage bin). This also means you don’t have to remove the gauge cluster from its harness (step 1). Just lay the cluster and trim to one side. Don’t remove the subconsole from the floor (steps 10, 11 and 12). Those two screws are difficult to attack with a #2 Phillips, and by leaving the subconsole in place, you don’t need to disconnect the wiring harness either. Just move the seat (either side) all the way forward and fold it down. This will give you enough access to reach in and unclip the PDIM and disconnect the two wiring-harness plugs. It’s tedious, but not especially difficult. You young guys with 20/15 vision won’t have any problems.

Good luck!

Wow, I would have been PISSED if I went in and they told me they wouldn't replace it under warranty. So what if it's a 2010 model. Your 2010 model is SHIT! That's why you're in there to begin with. I would have flipped out. LOL I don't know, maybe I'm just nuts or something. You handled that far far calmer than I would have.

Thanks at least for going through that and confirming that the software update was definitely internal to the PDIM. I was confident that's how it was but, without first-hand knowledge, all I had was a hunch.

I couldn't really blame the dealer. They wanted to warranty it, and I was standing there when the GM rep said they couldn't. At least they sold me the part at cost and offered to calibrate it for free (that's usually $100). This is on GM. They should make it right with a TSB (the one we've been waiting on for months now). I just got tired of waiting. It wasn't that painful. It was definitely worth it to get this thing resolved.

Ive been asked by GM to NOT post that part number.. this was within the last few days. They are very limited in stock, and if everyone goes to the dealer for the new part, the stock will run out and will further delay for the TSB. When the TSB comes out, they'll let me know asap.. it will cover the 2010's as well.

With all due respect, I'm not inclined to accommodate GM after the way they treated me last week. People spend a lot of money on these cars, and they deserve better than this. The fact that they don't have a large stock of parts shouldn't prohibit them from releasing the TSB. Furthermore, the absence of a TSB shouldn't be an excuse to not honor their warranty. The only option they offered me under the warranty was to replace my current PDIM with the same PN (the one they already know is defective). Surely the number of people on this thread is not enough to overwhelm one of the largest corporations in the world. Release the TSB, build the parts, and honor the warranty. It shouldn't be this hard. And the people who bought these cars with defective PDIM's shouldn't have to wait around (possibly until their warranty expires anyway) for GM to get their act together and fix the problem.

That said, I see from your signature that you're a Boatswain's Mate there on the strand. I was an SH-60 driver at North Island years ago (I got out right after the 1st Gulf War), and some the finest sailors I knew were BM's. Please don't interpret my rant against GM as a personal attack on you. I appreciate all the time and effort you've put into this thread. If it weren't for the information you provided here, I would still be cursing my radio every day. I think the others here deserve the same opportunity to resolve their issues instead of waiting on the suits at GM to get off their collective asses and release the TSB.

I'm glad there are still young guys like you who are willing to make the sacrifices required to serve in the U.S. Navy. JFK said it's one of the most honorable things a man can do, and he was right.

If it will cover the 2010's then why did the GM rep deny the guy above? GM has handled this PDIM issue horribly. I wasn't blaming the dealership for not honoring the warranty. It's all GM on this. I would have grabbed the phone and argued with the GM rep. It's a known documented problem on the 2010 PDIMs. To say that they aren't going to replace a 2010 PDIM with a 2011 one is just ignorant since the 2010 models are what's wrong. You don't replace a defective unit with the same defective unit. They're all defective.
I would have argued with the rep on the phone and if I wasn't getting anywhere with that jackass then I would have demanded to talk to their boss. The bigger stink you make the more likely you'll get your problem resolved. They just want you to go away.

^Exactly...which is how I got mine replaced under warranty.

What we are saying is that we were told by GM they were going to make this a TSB. So, keep your receipts for purchasing the new PDIM's as GM SHOULD reimburse you for these parts. If not, I'd be a PISSED OFF CAMPER! Or, you can hold off for just a bit and wait till the TSB comes out. If Cheryl says it's coming out, I'll believe her 100%.

Don't waste ya'lls money if the part is going to get fixed soon.

I'm getting a new head unit with USB already integrated so will probably be selling my PDIM and won't mess with trying to get it replaced under warranty.
