Tapping out.
Tired, had a major "disagreement" with a contractor that did some work on rebuilding some of the patio and other brick pavers around the house. He somehow thought going 50% over his quote without a phone call wasn't a problem. I know he ended up doing more than what he planned, but not a phone call until the end of the day and even then he didn't tell me how much over. Ended up trying to bill me for an extra grand and acted like somehow he had authorization to just run up the meter. Settled to split the difference, but somehow I feel like the bad guy.:(

Careful with them contractors....I work with them nearly every day (not one, myself -- thank goodness)....sheisters, the lot of them. There's maybe one or two I know of out of...50 (?) that will do honest, good work.

A 15% increase above and beyond the quote/estimate would be within accepted business practice, 50% is way out of line, especially without a phone call to at least give you a heads up or to ask permission for the overage. I've been in the construction industry for about 40 years, if I did such a thing with one of my clients I'd be a) not paid for the overage and likely b) involved in litigation to remove my claims for payment so there would be no liens against the property. I sometimes go way over estimate/budget when dealing with renovations due to unforseen circumstances, the difference is when I encounter them I IMMEDIATELY contact the property owner for approval of the extra expenses before proceeding with any extra work. Don't feel like the bad guy, your contractor simply needs to learn how to run his business in a professional manner. Perhaps he is trying to earn some extra cash for his "Z/28 fund"? Clyde |
