New Site Idea...

I few months ago I had the idea for a new site. Its not something I am currently pursuing, but being a programmer, I could probably pull it together fairly quickly.

What spawned my idea was many of my ignorant friends and coworkers who have no clue about American cars, and happily drink the "Jap cars or German cars are superior to all American cars" kool aid. Its quite frustrating, but I often enjoy putting them in their placeby proving to them I can get a more powerful, nicer car, for $10k cheaper than the ones they want.

So my idea is this: Something like "TryAmerican.com" where users can select the foreign vehicle(s) they are interested in and it will return American cars that compete in the segment. It will display specifically why the car is better, performance wise, mileage wise, and of course cost wise.

This arguably could be considered similar to something like Cars.com, but instead have a very "eye opening" American atmosphere. What I aim to accomplish is dispelling the stereotypes and myths surrounding the American auto industry, and give them a level playing field. If I can simply open the eyes and mind of a single person regarding American cars, I think it would be worth it.

So I'm curious what you think. To start, it wouldn't be anything to fancy, probably ASP.NET, but I think it could be pretty powerful. Thanks for your opinions!

Do it. Seriously. This sort of grass roots thing is what the industry needs now. Too many are just idly saying "Yay appliacar!" and GM is being forced in a way to heed these calls and make appliacars.

DISPELL THE APPLIACAR MENACE FROM THE AMERICAN PSYCHE! FIGHT THE APPLIACAR!

dude, that's a brilliant idea. make it an appealing and professional looking page, and that could have potential for a smash hit. north american cars are kickass, but people still "drink the koolaid" as you said, and refuse to believe ford/gm/chrysler are capable of building a decent car.

most of my friends are poisoned by the "north american cars suck.... i love import and european cars....." and i'm incapable of swaying them, no matter how many stats i throw at them, no matter if i tell them GM as a 426 hp car on the market that costs a ton less than any other competitor, their rebuttal is "their car quality sucks... they all rust and the interiors are low quality..."
and i'm left bashing my head againt the wall, and ing

As someone who works in the automotive industry I thank you for doing this . Great to see there are people who are not brainwashed like most consumers .

Good idea (although that domain name is taken).

One easy way to dispell myths, send em to epa.gov. That will kill the "american cars get horrible gas mileage" thing pretty quick.

I'm surprised the not-so-big-anymore 3 haven't come up with something like this.

I figured it would be... I'm sure I could come up with something witty yet descriptive, capable of conveying its purpose fairly quickly.

I was thinking about.. ahem... enlisting you, oh great VIN tracking God for web dev, if you were ever up to it. I know we talked about your thoughs on web design, but maybe I'll run some ideas by you.

Thanks to everyone for the positive response. I'll start thinking about it more seriously, and perhaps throw together a basic site in my free time. Keep your opinions coming!

I really dont think the problem has anything to do with build quality or reliability. I really think that the american consumer has a problem with product selection...

Lets be honest here. GM and Ford have no problem pumping out Silverados, F-150s, Escalades, Tahoes, Suburbans, Navigators, Expeditions, etc etc etc that buyers run to the market to pick up. I think the real problem is... none of them make a sedan thats worth a damn, looks wise at least.

Leave price out of the equation. whats a better buy right now. a Chevy Malibu or a Volkswagon Jetta/Passat? GM is all over the news and everyones rambling on about how they ran themselves into ground. Volkswagon, on the other hand, as well as BMW are offering .09% financing, and FREE, read that again, FREE maintainence for the 3 years. My ex-girlfriend drove a new malibu, i liked it, i really did, but not until i got behind the wheel of it the first time. My brother drove a jetta for 150,000 worry free, no issue miles and i have to say the fit and finish was superior in the german made car.

GM, Ford, and Chrysler right now have been subjected to play by a completely different set of rules. Instead of groundbreaking design, we're getting groundbreaking gas milage constraints. Theres only 1 way to get a car to 30mpg... its gotta be light, its gotta be efficient, and its got to be way down on power. That doesn't exactly make for a car thats exciting to drive. Some how BMW makes a 3series that runs forever, gets above average gas milage, is reasonably priced, is fun to drive, and holds its value for a significantly longer time than any american car... seems like the american products just don't match up. Once again we're talking bang for buck, not reliability or build quality.

Maybe if any of the american car companies made a car that really turned your head when you saw one, we'd buy it... Until then, there are numerous alternatives that out preform as all around vehicles....

The ford 500 doesn't make panties drop-- and its the same price as a BMW 3series... what would u buy?

OK you found one... hurray. And i agree the CTS is a nice car, but lets admit, over priced, and the resale on a Cadillac is awful.
