durability of DIY painted engine covers

So I think I already know the answer but I'm looking for some peace of mind. How durable are the painted engine covers that other forum members have done themselves. By durable I mean does the paint really hold up to the engine heat? I would think that the engine gets way too hot for a paint job to remain looking good (fading, cracking, blistering, etc). However with so many members doing the self mod I'm guessing there aren't really any issues?

Issues? None! Zero! Go for it.
Some use Krylon Fusion and others like myself ordered GM paint.

Buy GM paint IF you want to paint it orange. Krylon Fusion paints are great, but orange isn't close to IOM. You should be fine with yellow, white, red, grey, black.

Should you use an adhesion promoter?

I didn't and have had no issues. I used rubbing alcohol and went over it real good and then a tack cloth to ensure no lint was on it and shot it with several light coats, allowing it to dry in between coats.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Lucky for me I'm doing white so there won't be a problem with color matching. Now I just need for the weather to cooperate so I can do the painting outside.

I'm doing the same. I bought a prep and the white Fusion paint. Let's wish each other good luck! lol

I am about to paint mine with

Rustolleum Blue Metallic Paint. It is in a spray can. Anybody know how this will work out?

Deez if you are going to use that then I highly suggest putting at a minimum a coat of plastic primer and adhesion promoter.

Painting plastic especially plastic that is going to get as hot as the engine cover will needs proper prep like you would in detailing your car. If not you have a extreamly high risk of cracking, pealing and fading.

Better to be safe than sorry especially when you can pick up both cans for around $12 combined.

No adhesion promoter on mine, just cleaned with dawn, dried, wiped with alcohol, let dry, and shot it.

I just drove it over 8 hours only stopping for gas. It was close to 90 degrees there and back. No issues in those 16 hours so I'm thinking it will be fine.

I also didn't use adhesive promoter on mine, just cleaned it, used primer and spray painted it, been a couple of months.
