To add a little context to the history, the following quote from the Shelby American website:
"During the disappointing '68 season, the teams raced a special tunnel port 302. The heads were impressive but the engine was a problem. The Shelby team went through 30 Ford supplied engines during the 1968 racing season. Ford wouldn't let the Shelby team go back to the proven 289." Clyde |

Both have been top depending on the year, and your definition of top dog changes the ranking also. Sometimes only one of the two were available. When they were both available at the same time it seems to me that the SS was the top dog most of the time.

In a straight line it was a driver's race between the L78 and the Z28. In the twisties it wasn't even close.

I would like to see it just like gen 1 camaro's before chevy got gay and out of backing racing.
The z28 is supposed to be the road race car. the original was the can am series car DZ302 high reving. Ie the Z28 would be a ls7 powered car on a big diet. The SS was the musle car version. more for striat line seat of the pants feel. The SS and Z28 were meant not mean to be better or worse they were for a different market segment. people are too caught up in trim level. the ZL1 seems to do it all though so not sure I care to much about a Z28 at this point. |

Also, the Z/28 package and SS package have taken turns being the package for going straight or being the handling package.
So, its hard to decide since the SS was for raw power one generation and the Z/28 the other. |
