As long as people are buying them, Manual transmissions will be around. I don't think it is going away anytime soon...

I'm sure there will come a day when the vast majority of performance cars are auto-only...and then one day, a manufacturer will offer a manual again, and people will remember how much fun they find it (or whatever the attraction), and it'll rise again.

The problem is - autos (whether traditional or automated manuals) are quicker, more accurate, and in many cases, more efficient because the manufacturer can calibrate precise shift points versus "shift when you want" in manuals.

Like the V8, I see no evidence to support a mass extinction in my lifetime, though. Even electric cars will need multiple gears to keep the motors spinning a little slower for that max-torque.

Have you been Overseas? 95% of transmissions are manual in some countries.

Why is that? Are you getting tired of the manual?

I prefer a stick because it makes you a better driver. Cheap gas prices, big SUVs, EPA, minivans combined with American culture and customs for the lazy, fat life has made the automatic dominant in the USA. Sad.
Hike gas up to $8 gallon and watch the diesel/stick return.
+1 for this. I learned on a auto and I still have yet to master a manual. I am good, but not great. I learned to use a manual a week ago and I am 20. That's a little pathetic. Driving schools should teach you both.

Learned in a auto and are extremely used to them, i never drove a stick because nobody i know owns one! Im a Enthusiast 100% and always had that urge to switch to the dark side. Im still saving for a 2ss and would love for it to be a Ls3 if i had somebody to teach me but...

To answer the Op question, I do think the manual will die out in another 15yrs because in America im sure Automatics are the majority of the sells ( Correct me if im wrong ). Imho I hope both stay because you have Different Strokes For Different Folks.

Manual transmissions will never go away because there will always be a market for cheap, economy cars. Manual trans equipped cars are cheaper than their auto trans equivalents.
The late model Ferrari's and Lamborghini's are still clutch cars except they don't have a 3rd pedal. This is the same idea as the modern Formula 1 cars. The high end car companies have perfected the operation of their transmissions and have determined it is impossible for a person to shift as fast and direct. The computer disengages/engages the clutch at perfect times and rev match the downshifts perfectly. This is all accomplished by paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

I know how it works. Lack of a clutch pedal means that the car is shifting for you, so it's not a true "manual" by definition.
