P449 code remedy (EVAP canister replacement)

P449 code remedy

Vapor Canister Vent Solenoid
Part number: GM GENUINE 19329627

So I've been having an intermittent CEL coming on recently (2010 Camaro SS) with the code P0449 being thrown up, after searching the forum I've seen its the EVAP canister that fails but no write up on how its been changed step by step.

The recommendation of dropping the rear axle to replace is not required if you have patience and someone with hands that can reach small place's.

The process is very fiddly but I managed it over a good couple of hours with 2 people.

Step 1: Jack up rear passenger side and remove wheel. (also have the battery disconnected while doing this job)

Step 2: Remove exhaust back box's and pipes to allow access to the gap by the rear dif on passenger side.

Step 3: Locate canister and unplug the red connector (from top of connector pull tab out and down by hand)

Step 4: Depending on condition of bracket you can either try and pry it off canister with a long flat head screwdriver, or alternatively if it's corroded on push canister side to side to break the metal bracket to free it up, being careful of the wiring on the right hand side.

Step 5: Using long reach long nose pliers through the gap underneath, release the clip holding hose onto the canister (this takes a bit of back and forth, some WD40 and some swearing to pull it off and someone pushing canister as far in as possible from the wheel arch gap to make the clip easier to get pliers on)

Step 6: Cut the corrugated hose at the canister end, do this through the wheel arch gap by brake lines and feed the hose through to the gap under car and give it a good tug to release (be careful not to punch yourself in the face).

Step 7: Removing canister is a case of pulling towards a void by the diff and doing a 3 point turn in a downwards motion.

To install the new canister it's simply a case of reversing the steps and this will remove the CEL light P449 code that appears. To secure the canister in place if you need to break the bracket is to use a cable strap on the support beam and around the corrugated hose.

Hope this helps if anyone is thinking of doing this it can be done on the drive with the Camaro on axle stands,a socket set, a set of long reach long nose pliers, cutters, patience and £30 in parts.
