My Axle snapped!!!!(updated)
So I purchased a 2013 1LE 1SS at the end of July and have loved every minute of it. This thing has been a blast....well until New Years eve...
So I was at a stop sign, started out in 1st real easy and then shifted into 2nd. When I accelerated I heard what sounded like a shotgun go off in the back seat. Now, I was in a residential area so I was not getting on it or accelerating hard at all. I had been in 2nd long enough to get up to about 25-30 mph. Scared the crap out of me.....Anyway, had it towed to the local Chevy dealer by my house just before they closed and was able to get a rental from the enterprise lot across the street(covered by the chevy dealer by the way). They called me late yesterday and said something in the differential failed. I'm not much of a wrench turner so I didn't know what happened but, the tow truck driver was a big car guy and he looked under it when he was pulling it up on the flatbed and noticed the right rear axle was hanging low. Anyway, I haven't tracked this car nor have I hit any drag strips and the car is bone stock with 6,000 miles on it. Just thought I'd share my experience with you guys. They say it should be ready late next week so hopefully it is fixed right and no other issues popup due to it being in the shop....

With thousands of parts in thousands of cars, there's always a few that escape QC and are faulty. There's always an expected failure rate. Unfortunately you got a part or parts that weren't up to snuff.
Here's hoping they fix your car to good as new! Good luck.

Wow, thats a sad story but happy its being resolved fairly smoothly. I am 500 miles from reaching 6000 miles myself, hopefully mine holds up haha.

Thx for sharing this.
Ask them when you pick it up, exactly what snapped and why. Ask them if this will happen again and/or if the new part they installed was updated in design or not. I'm curious.. |

It may not be acceptable......but it is reality! That is why there are warranties! You reach a point of diminished returns on QC, and at no level of testing or QC will defects be 100% eliminated. It sucks when it happens, but if the manufacturer of anything backs their product according to the warranty, you are good to go.

This^. I agree that is why there are warranties. I had a lady with a new Cadillac tell me that's it's crazy for her $50000 Cadillac's check engine light to come on. I tried to explain that sometimes parts fail and that is why her car had a warranty and road side assistance. Then I told her that there is no garente that any car, new or old will start every time. Blew her mind.

Lucky you weren't going around turn 12 at Road Atlanta. Get pics of the parts.

Double Oaks? I dont golf - at least not enough to count.
I still have yet to see another 1LE on the road. Let me know next time you're passing through Chateau Elan. |

You don't have to accept it. But it's here anyway. The only QC program I'm aware of that mechanically or NDT checks EVERY part sold is the US Navy Sub-Safe quality system. 100% of the parts are inspected/tested. It's life or death on those parts and they MUST work.
If they did that to cars, the base Camaro would start at approximately $63,000 USD most likely. (I made up the number for effect). You would basically price yourself right out of the car market. Engineering/bean counters are going to accept some risk of a failure-rate percentage.

warranty - go with stock.
Out of warranty - LPE 9.5" or ford 9" conversion. |
