Keep My 2SS Going
I am going to be 46 if GM survives and get my 2SS. I plan on this being my last car. Meaning I want to keep it running 30 years.
With that said can any of you car buffs tell me the following: 1. Best Oil to use. 2. How often to change it 3. How often change transmission fluid. Going with Auto. And last but not least what do you guys use to keep interior in good shape and how often? Thanks Scott |

I'm a fan of Mobil 1. They recommend changing your oil every 3000 miles, though you should be fine doing about 5k before changing.

You will hear alot of people tell you different things about oil
follow the manufactures recomendations. The pay engineers millions of dollars to figure this stuff out. Follow what the owners manual says and you will be fine Oil never looses it lubricisity (SP) oil gets contaminated as a by product of hydrocarbon emmisions that a internal combustion engine creates. Oil will always lubricate. I dont believe in changing transmission fluid on a auto....but thats just me most people will disagree with that statment. To each his own. |

I'd say 5 - 7k on synthetic is fine. I will be doing it every 3k though. My thoughts is that it is cheap peace of mind and certainly can't hurt. Oil is your cars blood .. On as side note .. I wouldn't listen to all manufacturers recommendations ... my 135i .. turbo 3.0L which also uses the oil for the turbo as well.. the recommend every 15k .. LOL ... That might be fine for someone who has a lot of money or doesn't want to keep the car (poor bastard whoever does get it used though) ... I think some people have tested their oil and seems like 7k is good but don't push it past that (with synthetics) .. Crowley

I run mobile 1 in all my vehicles and change it every 3-4K. I would change the trans fluid and filter at 10k and every 30-40k, rearend lube at 10k,every 50k after IMO.

All synthetic are not full synthetic , do a little more digging and you see what Iam talking about .
I run Amsoil's fluids and like them very much . If you what to run Mobil 1 get the "Extended Performance" oil . And for the love of your car dont use R.P. rearend fluid , Ive seen independent test where it thins WAY out quickly .

If you race or drive your car hard a lot you need to change oil every 3k or less depending on how often you do these. For the typical driver though change the oil between 5k and 7k but no more then 7k.
Other then the 1st 5k of owning a vehicle, I've never seen anyone change the tranny fluid in an auto. |

I have an uncle that retired after a lifetime of being an automatic transmission specialist. He always recommended fluid and filter change after 50K. As long as the clutch packs have not been burned and the shifting is normal, there is really no need to take any action. That's why there is a dipstick and no drain plug usually. Pull the dipstick occasionaly, which most oil change centers do for you, to see if the fluid is clean. Smell it to see if it smells burnt. If not and fluid level is normal you have nothing to worry about. If the fluid doesn't look or smell normal you could have any of several problems. IE: torque converter, clutch pack, planeteary gears, etc.
