Oil Change Confusion- Help Wanted

Hello All,

I know this has been discussed, but I am unsure and after talking with the service writer at the dealership I am even more confused. So her it goes. I have read the manual and asked the dealership about oil changes and when they should be done. The manual say to change when the light comes on but at least once a year, the dealership says the same thing but people on this forum have said to change it at 500, 1500 or 3000 miles for the original oil change and vary on opinion of when to change the oil regularly.

The dealer said there is no more break in oil. So what do you all think. Thanks

The reason I changed it at 810 miles was to get the original metal shavings out of it. One of the service guys actually took the oil from my car and put it in his. To each his own I guess.

The idea is just to get any metal shavings out of it from it being new. My car did seem to get some more peep out of it after I did the oil change. Almost has me thinking of doing it again tomorrow when it goes in for more testing. It has 3400 miles on it now.

I read about someone who changed it after 250 miles.

Maint. tech at the dealer said 3000 miles for the first, then whenever the computer tells you it's time.

Salesman didn't have a clue.

The manual mentions a 1500 mile "break in period" - but doesn't mention changing the oil right after you hit the 1500 mile mark.

Metal shavings? - If you're worried about little pieces of metal in your engine, then I'd recommend changing the oil... driving it for a day... then change it again so you get everything flushed out - if you're really worried about metal shavings. Other than that, I don't want to hear any about changing your oil for the purpose of draining out loose metal shavings.

I broke in a GM 350 engine in 1000-1500 miles... forget what it was.

Followed the manual, changed out the oil at 1500 miles. The Oil that came out was brand new and no metal shavings whatsoever. I still feel better about doing it, but even more better that I didn't waste the money changing it way too early (500 miles or less).

I'm "old school".

I change out first at 500 mi., then 3000 religiously.

Do the first oil change around 1000-1500 and then follow the OLM. Its FAR better than literally throwing away money with good oil when you change it at 3000 miles.

I agree with you by the way, for the short money it costs to change the oil, I did mine at 1,500 too. People say it's a waste of money nowadays, but I'm old school. (it certainly doesn't hurt anything).
I can't find anything in the manual that says "Change your oil after the first 1,500 miles" though.

The dealer told me that with today's engines there is little to no metal shavings and with the synthetic oil used in the Camaro it is not needed, when I read that the OLM dictates the oil change it was a little concerning for me since it states to change at least once a year if not indicated by th OLM. My car is not a daily driver prbably around 8 k a year, but a good 8 k, maybe a few road trips in the fall but like I said just want to be sure I currently have only 556 miles and about a month old, but plan on keeping this car for a very long time and want to make sure I take care of it and since I have a 7yr 100000 mile warranty I do not want to void it

My service manager basically said the same thing. He told me (this morning) that I didn't need to get my oil changed (1000 miles now on my car). I told him to please change the oil because I drive my car hard and want new oil in it.
There were several mechanics standing right behind him when I said this. They smiled, shook their heads up and down, and gave me a thumbs up to tell me I was doing the right thing. None of this was seen by the service manager that was looking right at me.

So I got my oil change and I'm happy (and so is my car).
By the way it was just over $80.00

Does it void your warranty to do it yourself or what? Why not just change it yourself?

You can change it yourself, just keep the reciepts for the oil and filter, doesn't void the warranty.
