Will a Z28 be made beyond 2015 with a 427?

Hi Everyone

With the café standards changing for 2016 - will Chevrolet make a Z28?

I do not think the 427 normally aspirated engine will make it past 2015 Model Year. That is just my opinion. How rare will these be in the future? Hard to guess. The new 2016 next gen may not be able to fit a 427 - or will it? The Chevy parts bin and the research that was done to date is being re-purposed very well.

What do you all think will happen beyond 2015.

I think I read somewhere that GM was going to make the Z28 for 2014 and for 2015 - however beyond that there was no definite answer.

Seems the public is not keen on buying an expensive car once they find out they have to replace the tires every 5000 miles, let alone not be able to drive it in wet weather, let alone northern winter conditions - that is the feedback I am getting from one major Chevrolet dealer.

Thoughts?

As far as I know, the 2014/2015 Z/28 will be the last production car to use the LS7. GM tried to develop an LTx 427 but couldn't meet emissions regulations with it.

The 6th gen Camaro will be a 2016 model so, if there is a 6th gen Z/28, it won't be until later in the generation.

The 2016 Camaro line-up should be a very interesting sight to see....

I think right now they have more models than engines that will be available in 2016....Something's got to give....

Personally, I would like to see the Z/28 go to a COPO type construction for the Gen 6 if they can't come up with a unique enough powerplant for regular production....

Don't worry about "unique enough". Ford seems to be going gangbusters on the GT350, which will have the biggest engine to use a flat plane crankshaft. Furthermore, the rumors are that they'll be releasing a GT40/GT successor (given the timing, I'm guessing GT50 will be the name) AND racing it at Le Mans.

With that kind of competitive pressure, GM won't be sitting idly by and twiddling their thumbs...

A 427 could fit the block is the same size as the others. It's the internals that make it bigger. With the lt 6.2 at 460/hp/tq you don't need but 45 hp to get there. If the next gen is lighter, if it will fit put all the same parts that you can on it and it will be just as good if not better than the gen 5 z/28. Having a body in white or copo z/28 that would be interesting.

Let's not rule out technology. It's possible they could create a very interesting engine (even a modern 427) -- that, with the latest super high-pressure direct injectors, stop/start tech, etc. -- might be made CARB legal.

That said, would a company want to spend money developing a new power plant that would, more than likely, not last a full decade? I haven't researched the LT4 in the Z06, and don't know what that motor without forced induction might be capable of. It seems to me, however, that we're in a world where forced induction is going to be mandatory from here on out -- at least at the 500 to 600 horsepower output range that will be required on the next Z/28.

LS7 427 in a Gen-6 Camaro, as per OP? No.

What will a Gen-6 ultra-performance Camaro debut with, for '16? It may not arrive till '17, just as the GT 350 is delayed a year. As for power, if the LT4 is good enough for the Z06, it would probably work very well in a ZL1 or Z/28. Some rumors have the Z/28 being essentially an R-version of the ZL1.

If, as rumored, the GT350 arrives with 550 hp n/a in a weight-reduced Mustang, it's going to take a heavily revised LT1 to get to that number (n/a). Or, defer to the already-on the-shelf LT4 and show the tail lights to the Mustangs.

As for a COPO-type version of Z/28, I have one question: Why? Price points for hand-built cars built in tiny numbers do not get them into the hands of the majority of people who really want to own-drive such a car.

I would rather the Z/28 not come back if they have to supercharge it.

That's my preference as well, but I'll reserve judgement once the Z06 starts getting lapped at Thunderhill when it's over 100 degrees. If the car can handle that kind of abuse, I might be open to a supercharged Z/28. Any Z/28 has a huge amount of history, both "ancient" and recent, to live up to -- so it would be hard to imagine GM not honoring that badge.

However, the reality is that people expect a certain number when it comes to horsepower. Forced induction may be the only way to get those numbers. It will be interesting to see, over the next 2 years, what comes out of the Camaro engineering team...

Yeah, I couldn't see the ZL1 and the Z/28 using the same motor. Maybe they give the ZL1 and generation off like how Ford alternates between the Mach 1 and the Boss. It helps keep interest up when a nameplate goes away and then makes a grand return. I wanted a NA Z06 but I don't think GM would have used the LT4 if it wasn't up for repeated abuse with a good grasp on heat soak.

The end of the 5th Gen Camaro will signal the end of the Gen IV performance V8's as the 6th Gen Camaro will be Gen V powered. I'm sure something in the LT line of engines will serve the variants of the Camaro and Corvette well.
