I understand that you have to grind the rivets off of the door panels to get them off. Is there a special screw that you used to re install the panel?

That is true. The screws cannot be more than 1/8" long or it will penetrate the vinyl
(almost did it myself). Can't remember the width of the screw but you can tell by looking at the hole or the existing screws that you will take out on the back of the panel. There is a DIY thread with more details.

Has anyone ever tried taking a very sharp razor blade and cutting around the door panel insert and then pulling off the fabric without having to remove the entire door panel? Looks like I could do this and then mask off everything, cover everything, etc. and then paint the door panel insert from the outside.

Seems like removing the cloth will be a hard thing to do using a razor knife especially since the cloth is glued on. You will have to remove the glue as well. I used mineral spirits. Removing the panel eases the process by removing the staples on the back and peeling off the cloth. I highly suggest to NOT scrape the glue off like I did. The panel is very thin. Scraping it damaged the panel with gouges and it took several coats of bondo and wet sanding to repair it.

Thanks wer2foxs for the advice. Yep, I would have sanded it and messed it up. You probably saved me hours of work! Sharp ride by the way.
